I totally agree with Solution #1. We have a Whirlpool (apparently Maytag is the same) and it gets moldy 2 days after it has been run. The maintenance guy came out and said we had to use the rinse cycle every day. For an $800 dollar dishwasher (which is less than 1 year old!) I expect more.

Failure of the water INLET valve if fails to stop the flow or it is due to constant supply from the controller unit to the inlet valve.You can confirm this by checking the voltage on the INLET valve, if voltage is continuous it is the board and if the voltage cuts but the flow continues the valve is struck.

timer is bad. if you go to www.searspartsdirect.com , you can enter your model # and find the part #. then google the part #, you should be able to find it pretty cheap. easy to replace.

Under the bottom plate there should be a screw in filter .The top should be visible .Graspping the top turn counter clockwise into it is free. Clean and replace.I found a dish scrubber brush to be the best way too clean the. Filter

FYI, for anyone else with the same symptoms. I took mine apart and found that the seal on the motor shaft failed and over time corroded the motor shaft bearing causing it to failed. I ordered full motor assembly from the parts store.
