DS Lite not turning on? Read this tip to find out how to fix it!

Have you dropped your DS Lite and now it rattles?

Is it charging but not turning on?

Then this is the guide for you!!

A very common problem with the DS Lite is that when it is dropped a small chip called the L2 Inductor comes away from the motherboard. This will still enable the DS to charge but you will not be able to switch it on. This guide will take you through step by step how to repair your DS Lite.

Things you will need :-

Tri-Wing screwdriver - 808dc98.jpg

Small phillips screwdriver - 62cc67c.jpg

A case opening tool - c6a93f9.jpg

A soldering iron - 6afee1e.jpg

Some solder - 864fcea.jpg

If you are lucky then your L2 inductor is still rattling around inside your DS. If it is lost then they can be bought very cheaply off of ebay :- L2 Inductor Ebay (Please note - This is not my ebay username, just the person that I always get my parts from)

Ok now we have everything it is time to start. Clear a nice big area for you to work in.

First remove any game cartridges from their slots and the DS stylus, like so -

ff0a01b.jpg

Next remove the battery cover and 2 small rubber bungs here -

ad37b16.jpg

Underneath the 2 rubber bungs are 2 phillips screws.

Next remove the battery and take out the circled 3 phillips screws. You do not need to remove the uncircled phillips screw in the battery compartment.

e10d7bb.jpg

Next, remove the 4 circled tri-wing screws using the tri-wing screwdriver -

9a2257b.jpg

Ok, thats all the screws removed, now to lift the case off. Pulling up from the back with 2 fingers on the shoulder buttons gently pull up and towards you but only enough so that you can get the case tool in to help with leverage. See below pictures -

1b023a2.jpg

b39b350.jpg

Work the case tool around the gap and the top cover should lift off easily. DO NOT FORCE IT! You will then be able to see the motherboard like so -

b8a30eb.jpg

The L2 Inductor sits to the left of the motherboard, right underneath the power switch -

03b3bab.jpg

Make sure that when you took the case apart if the L2 inductor was rattling around, it has not been lost. Hopefully you have managed to find it. What you need to do now is resolder the L2 inductor back onto the motherboard. Hold the L2 Inductor in place and carefully apply the soldering iron to each end, like so (it does not matter which way round the L2 Inductor goes) -

5a4ce25.jpg

71cacac.jpg

If you need to hold the L2 Inductor use something like tweezers.

Once you have secured the L2 Inductor onto the motherboard apply a tiny amount of solder onto each end of the L2 Inductor just to give it a bit more strength.

Thats it! You are done! Congratulations, you have repaired your DS Lite!

Now all you have to do is put it back together and you are finished. There are a couple of important things you need to know when putting your DS Lite back together.

You must make sure both the power switch slider and the volume switch slider are in the right place. The power switch slider should spring back to where it is supposed to but these pictures will confirm where they need to be -

Volume switch all the way to the left

79ea2ed.jpg
Power switch all the way to the right as you look at it

b24d383.jpg

The case sliders also need to be in the right place too, if you do not get this right you will break the little tabs off of the switches!

Volume slider all the way to the left

Power slider all the way to the right

When you re-assemble your ds, start refitting the case from the front backwards. Get it all in line on the front and the back should drop down with ease. Again do not force anything!!

Replace all the screws in reverse order and you are 100% done!! Give yourself a pat on the back!!

Where do i go to get a wifi conection

To conect to wifi, you'd need to buy a WI-FI USB connecter. They can be found at most video game stores for $37.00 (varies on location) They get plugged into your USB port on your computer, then they enable you to connect to wifi . If you have a Laptop the USB port should be found on the side. If you just need more information off of what I've given you, read the bottom of my post for a recommended website for Wi-Fi. When you get a USB connecter: On your DS: Once you have it plugged in, turn on your DS with a game that is compatible with Wi-Fi. In the game there should be a place where it allows you to adjust your Wi-Fi settings. When you select that, two options should appear, tap on the one that is labled "Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Settings" You'll see four options to chose from, you want to tap on the one near the bottom of the screen, it's shown as "Connect To Your Wi-Fi USB Connecter." The next screen will say for you to install your Wi-Fi connecter software to your computer On your computer:(you must have internet connection on the computer) Close your DS for now and turn your attention to your computer, insert the USB into the the USB port on your computer. The picture that is next to the port will look like this: Install the software first, then a window will appear after the installation. Ignore it for now, and look back to your DS. On your DS: It should still be on the same screen you left it on unless your battery is dead (not recommended to conect to wi-fi with low power ) Tap "Ok" on your DS, It'll then launch a test connection. Look back at your computer screen now. On your computer: The box I told you to leave alone before will still be on, and now it should have your DS name inside it. Your DS name is what you entered your name as on your DS configuration settings. Click on your DS name and select the option allow access. You can either allow or deny anyone access to connect on wi-fi through your USB. On your DS: Now that you have allowed access to your self on the computer, you can get back to your game and tap on "connect to Wi-Fi" this time instead of tapping "test connection." You'll then get a friend code that will allow you to interact with others who have connected with the same game. Notes: For more about getting started, connected, and swapping friend codes, view this site: http://www.nintendowifi.com/global/AboutWIFI_DS.jsp Also, if you've ever heard of a Wi-Fi hotspot, that just means you have to take your own computer or laptop with Your own Wi-Fi USB connecter to the certain area for free Internet service. This only means public areas, like at Starbucks or Panera Bread Compay, but then if you're doing this at a friends house then you just need to get your self registered access on their USB.

R4 card

1- If you are using the same card in both cards and only work in the R4 deluxe then your R4 SDHC need different system files to work.

2- If you are using different cards with different system files for each one then the files would be corrupted, download them again from R4 site; or your SD memory need to be formatted to fat32 for your SDHC R4.

New R4 card never loads

You should check if the R4 card is actually R4 SDHC, because the firmware of R4DS is not compatible with it. If it is SDHC, go to this website http://rs320.rapidshare.com/files/140174805/English-1.21.zip to download the firmware for your card. If there are any roms on it, you should save them somewhere else, for you have to format the card first (do this in windows by going to 'this computer', then right-clicking on the SD card from your R4 and then select 'format'. Warning! Never select 'quick format'! This could do damage). Now your card is completely empty. Copy the files you just downloaded and unzipped to the card (5 files; _system_, moonshl, _DS_MENU.DAT, _DS_MENU.INI and _DS_MSHL.NDS). Now put the SD card in the R4 and it should work properly :) I had the same problem, and I have just solved it *grin*. I hope this was useful.

Action replay problems

Try resetting the hardware by following these steps: 1/ With the console powered off, hold A+B.
2/ Power up the console while still holding A+B.
3/ As soon as the Nintendo screen is displayed, before our screen stating this product is not endorsed by Nintendo, press and hold Start and Select while keeping hold of A+B.
4/ Continue to hold these buttons until the Main Action Replay screen is displayed, then release. Your product is reset, and will accept codes once more.
I do not have credit. these instructions were from codejunkies.com (creators of AR). then try uploading them on the computor.

Nintendo DS Lite won't turn on.

Hi. Same thing happenedto my son's. Also, when I shook it, I could hear a slight rattle inside as if a small piece had broken off. I took it apart and found that a small surface mount inductor had come off (it was right by the on/off switch I believe). I was able to get it soldered back on and added some glue for mechanical strength (since my solder wasn't as good as original). This worked a while but it came off again and I could never get it to stick and function again. Just shorting the terminals with wire didn't work, it needs at least some 'L' impedance. So, I tried making my own. I took a very small wire-wrap wire I had from my old college days, and wound it around a paperclip about 10times, solder the ends on, and then removed the clip. (think of tiny spool of wire with each end connected to solder pads). Believe or not, it worked and has been fine ever since. Apperently the tolerance for this circuit is pretty loose. FWIW.

Good luck. A fun project either way before giving up.

My Nintendo DS top screen is blank white and is not working

It's a poor connection to your top screen that's your problem, the issue is either that the conection is loose that holds the top screen ribbon cable to the board or that the ribbon cable to the top screen is damaged and will require replacing

Im trying to get wi-fi connection on it and its

That means that the connection you're trying to connect to is probably a WEP-encrypted WiFi source. The Nintendo DS Lite cannot support that format of WiFi, however Nintendo has posted a very detailed and visual step-by-step guide in how to resolve that here
Just scroll down to "My security settings are not supported or are not compatible" and follow the instructions.

Good luck.
