I just replaced my hoover belt and it is too loose

Greetings from GoVacuum,

The belt is going to be loose as long as the vacuum cleaner is in the upright posistion. If you have the vacuum cleaner with the handle locked in the upright setting, then the belt will be tight around the skinny belt. Once you release the handle of the vacuum cleaner, you can watch as the belt tightens over the roller brush. There are numerous problems with this particular model. We have recorded a very helpful video review of how to replace the belt, and do basic maintenace for this particular model. Hopefully this will help you figure out the correct installation, and other maintenance work you can do yourself.

Here's the video;

If this still does not fix the problem, and the brush is still not spinning, please feel free to email me at chris.jones (at) govacuum.com. I'm always more then happy to try and help you fix the vacuum.

Hoover wind tunnel won't self propel

There are really two reasons why the self-propelled wouldn't work. It could either be the belts on the vacuum cleaner are stretched or broken. The belts on this model control both the self-propelled transmission, as well as the brush roller. Here's a video that shows you how to inspect the roller brush and belts to make sure that they are installed properly and working. Try this repair first, as this is the easier one to fix.

The other problem if the belts are installed properly that would cause the self-propelled wouldn't work would be the self-propelled actuator arm. There is a cable that starts at the handle of the vacuum, and runs all the way down to the floor head of the vacuum that controls the transmission. As you pull backwards on the handle of the vacuum, the cable pulls this actuator arm backwards, which then turns the wheels backwards, and when you push forward it turns the wheels forward.

The problem with the way it's designed however, is that if you pick up the vacuum cleaner by the handle of the machine rather then using the carrying handle on the back of the vacuum, it causes too much tension on the actuator arm, and will cause the cable to rip right out of the arm.

This is a VERY common problem on this model. To check and see if this part is broken on your vacuum, step on the handle release pedal so that the handle is in the vacuuming position, push the pedal a second time so the machine lays flat on the floor.

Now if you look right behind the height adjustment switch, and the rug / floor switch where the floor part meets the upright part, you should see a cable that connects into the actuator arm. Pull up and down on the handle and look for movement. Is the cable loose with only a nut attached to it, or is it resting in the actuator arm?

Here's a very helpful link that shows you exactly how to replace the actuator arm:
How to Replace the Actuator Arm on Hoover Self-Propelled Windtunnel

If this didn't help you, and the problem is still happening, please just use the add a comment form here on Fixya and let me know that you're still having problems. I'd be honored to go through and do some more advanced diagnosing with you.

Dirt finder sensor stopped working

I had the same problem with a hoover windtunnel 6200 - u5477-900. I removed the flexible hose from top of the plastic tube running vertically along the right side of the back of the vacuum. When I used a flashlight to look into the plastic tube, I could see a clog at the bottom, where the flexible hose curved frontwards towards the brushes. I then removed the 2 screws holding the vertical plastic tube to the vacuum. When I disconnected the plastic tube from the flexible hose at the bottom, I found a clog of dirt and dog hair. After removing the clog and reassembling, the clean / dirty light now moves back and forth from red to green.

We have a Hoover Windtunnel vac, Model U6432-900,

The V belt will stay " loose" until you lower the handle. Try replacing the flat belt and that should work.

Hoover windtunnel dirt finder light stays red

I'm not sure about a 3 month old vac, I'd probably go the warranty route. However, for the older vacs thy start getting false positives. The sensor is simply a microphone hooked to a computer chip detecting sounds of dirt entering the bag.
To rig it to start working, you'll need to remove the tool accessory tray and elbow that enters the back of the vac, and attached to the bag. This will reveal the microphone at the elbow, and wire that runs into the bottom area of the vac. When on, a large amount of air comes from the bottom screw and area where the wires enter. My fix was to clean up the microphone contact points a little bit with a screwdriver, and then leave the vac running while putting in dampering in the hole at the bottom, and around the back of the elbow. Cotton balls and electrical tape at the bottom hole, and napkins around the outside of the elbow (wedged between the back of the vac assembly and elbow did the trick). The schematic for the vac is here: http<colon>//www<dot>vacsrus<dot>com/CartGenie/pg_U6485900<dot>asp
Look for micrphone.

Hoover Windtunnel shuts off

I found the following solution on this website. I have searched for hours and finally found this solution, it works! I HAD the same problem after cleaning the filter mentioned below, it is now working like it was new.

***by maverick_bea***
yes this machine has a thermal protector in it to shut off the machine if it gets to hot, this is normal. if there is no clogs in the hoses or in the machine then you will need to wash the filter at the top of the machine. you will have to remove the dirt cup and at the top you should see a half moon orange, well inside of this piece is the washable filter, clean and let it dry completly before putting back into machine. if this gets dirty and has not been cleaned, you can lose alot of suction. in some cases if this filter is not cleaned it can cause the machine to overheat so bad that it can damage the motor.

How do you put a Hoover runabout belt on vacuum

I found this on another site and it worked for me. RonL

Looking at the brush, remove the two screws from the black plate holding the brush. There are two clips that holds this plate once you remove the screws. This should be easy to remove with a flat type screw driver. Now is the tricky part to remove the top cover of the vacuum so you can access the compartment to put the belt on. The whole top part of this vacuum comes off. If you look above the part where black plate was, there are two more clips on the top left and top right hand corner. These two hold one end of the top cover. It is not as simple as pushing the clip to one end to slide out. You have to find a gap between the edge of top cover and bottom structure(right next to each clip) and shove the flat screw driver in and push the top cover away from the bottom structure and push down the top cover. You will notice that there are invisible hinges between the two which locks in the top cover.

Do the same procedure for the bottom right and left edges(right next to each end of the brush) of the vacuum and separate the two(bottom structure and top cover) out using the flat type screw driver..

Royal vacuum has no suction

If a vacuum has not suction then there has to be something plugged up in the port. You will probably have to remove the bottom. Either with a bag or bagless, find the suction port and usually it's plugged with all kinds of stuff. Sometimes if you have access to compressed air you could blow it out from where the bag hooks up or if bagless where it empties into the container. It's not that unusual for it to plug up. My parents have old old old carpet from I think the 70's, (The shag type that you can use a rake with) and there vacuum is always getting plugged up. Good luck.
