Camera wont shoot in automatic modes

Have you removed the batteries for a few hours (reset) ? Have you turned the dial around several times (clean contacts) The only other error is the flashing battery light, if it persistes, according to the manual. It's dead as repairs would be pretty expensive against a newer replacement.

Need lens (up to 200)

Lens needs are determined by the type of photography one shoots. Example, for my needs I use three prime lens, 35 mm, 50 mm, and 100 mm. Sold all my zoom lens purchased primes. The question is what are you attempting to capture? On a zoom lens look towards a constant aperture, not one when we zoom the aperture changes. Cordially

Film will not fully load

On many of the film Rebels, mine is the T2, the film is completely unwound. As we take pictures the film is rewound in to the film cassette. That is a film safety feature. If the back if the camera accidentally opens we only expose unused frames. The frames we took are safe in the cassette. Cordially

At first blush is sounds as though the mirror flipped up but not back down. Remove the lens look inside the camera press the shutter release what happens? Cordially,

Adding a lens to my camera

To be sure you can use the lens, buy a Canon EOS lens. The plastic ones, can be cheap. I bought my last lens 28 - 80 mm, couple of months ago, for 5 dollar. and a working EOS 500 was connected for the same price. (lens and camera are still in good working order) Don't try other brands, because even when you find a convertor, it could be the lens will only work on manual focus.

Shutting off flash

Yes, but not in the Auto mode, where the camera decides whether or not it needs the flash. Switch to the P mode, which works like Auto except you have control over the flash, exposure, and other factors. See pages 26 and 42 of this manual.

What is the proper way to load the film?

The film canister itself will have a spindle in the middle of it, with it sticking out on one side. Place the canister on the right side, with the spindle pointing upwards. There will be either a spool on the left with a series of pegs on it, or a red marking on the left side for you to place the edge of the film on. (If there are pegs, make sure the sprocket holes on the film fit over them).

I can't change the aperture setting or time value

Hello,

Try this.

Turn the command dial on the top of the camera to [AV]
Use the [main dial] next to the shutter button to adjust the aperture.

The rear button that is round that is marked 'Av +/-' is the shift button. This controls the exposure compensation.

Could you be turning the wrong wheel?

Hope this helps.
