What type of load (electrical) was hooked up to this generation?? If the surge voltage and current was exceeded above the generator maximum for any length of time. There problems, it could be the regulator, insulation burnt off the windings.


I am taking a guess here. Now, 7100 Watts is it typical surge wattage. This mean that the generator will deliver 7100 Watt (voltage times current) this is know as the power factor. The actual operating load would be 6800 Watts and I would even operator the generator at its peak wattage. Something in the neighborhood of 10--15% less the peak wattage. Therefore a good positive theatrical Wattage would be 5800 to 6350 operating wattage. Then this generator would run all day.



Just remember Ohm's Law. Current plays a big factor in loading of a generator while the operation voltage is at 120 AC Volts. Example: electric motor; Now electric motor when starting will pull three time its operation current. Operating current for a 1/2 HP AC motor is 6 amperes but start this electric motor will require 18 amperes. This is one reason why they starting capacitors on smaller electric motors. Larger three phase electric motor can literal stop a generator cold...in its tracks. It put such a large demand on the generator it stops the engine powering the generator. I have seen crankshaft break because the generator could handle the heavy current load.



Remember, any time you are running a small gas powered generator. All ways figure what the load and surge current load will be before hooking up any generator. Normally this is figured in VA (volt/amps). Wish you lock. GB...stewbison

Unclear when stated that there is a governor issue? I assume you have a Robin/Subaru 7.5 H.P. engine model EY280YD2510 with erratic behavior leading up to stalling out when a load is applied or the generator is at no load status after several minutes of run time?. Couple of things to check would be starting with the fuel system. Is there stale gas in the fuel tank? Have you verified fuel flow from tank? Is the fuel cutoff valve free of debris? Is the carb fuel bowel been removed and inspected for varnish? Is the air cleaner clean? Next, Ignition system. Have you inspected the flywheel for excessive rust? Have you reset the air gap on the ignition module? Does the on/off switch work (measured with a meter for continuity?) Any visual signs of damage with all wiring or the ignition module itself? I once thought I had an governor issue where the issue ended up being that the flywheel was corroded to the point that once the engine was fully warmed up the control module would contact the rust build up on the flywheel causing engine surges no matter what the load was on the generator, and at times would stall the engine. Clean flywheel off if necessary and reset the air gap on the ignition module. If that fails then inspect the governor spring (the top spring on the carb. linkage assembly) for excessive rust that will change the tension on the governor arm.Replace if in doubt! When doing all this inspecting ensure you have fresh fuel, oil, air filter, spark plug gapped correctly, and ignition module that has been tested as sound! These Robin engines are smooth running heavy duty engine that will perform for many years if taken care of. Good luck!

Sounds like the carb is clogged and the engine is starving. Clean and rebuild the carb

on the side of the carb tou have a screw turn in fully and out 1.5 turns

Since I don't have a model number to work with I am going to assume this is a generator with brushes. (I need your model number!)
Having said that... TRY THIS:
1. Plug in an electric drill to the output power plug and turn on the output power switch with the generator running.
2. Squeese the drill trigger switch and rotate the drill chuck as fast as you can. This will flash the field of the generator and often output power starts right away. NOTE: When power starts it will try and twist the drill chuck out of your hand. Just let go of the trigger and the drill chuck.

If you have an inverter type power head the steps are different for flashing the field. The easiest way is to do a male to male power cord from utility supply power connection and turn on the output power switch to re-establish a field in the PMG of the rotor.

There are other steps but without a model number this is what I am sending off at the moment. Respond with a model number if the steps above do not work and I will help you.
