1981 yamaha midnight special 850cc. starter button and kill switch not working but lights etc are working. no power from the start button. battery fully chaged? started after chaging the throttle cable.

If you here a clicking sound the button is good. Follow the positive battery cable to the starter solenoid it attaches to a terminal. The other terminal goes to the starter. With a piece of wire, jumper cable clamp,or a screw driver connect (short) across the terminals. If this makes the starter work then you have a bad solenoid. If that does not work, try holding the starter button and tapping on the starter with a plastic hammer. If the starter works now you either need new starter brushes or if the armature is bad a whole new starter.
get a 12v test light, probe the positive wire when you hit the start button, this will check that the wiring from the battery ,through the switch to the solenoid it working, Then probe the cable terminal on the solenoid, to mkes sure the cable is connecting, and then probe the starter side of the solenoid as you press the start button.
You checked the solenoid? (ont post hot all the time - the other post only hot when you press the start switch) Check the low volt wires from battery to solenoid and solenoid to switch and from switch to ground.
Kill switch works one of two ways. Either it grounds you out, killing the spark or it disconnects a circuit shuttig ignition off. So...forget the switch for a moment and wrap the two wires together, try starting, nothing ? then separate the two wires and make sure they are not touching any metal parts, try starting again.....now you have eliminated the switch as your problem.....cap off the wires and don't hook them to the switch if your bike is now running....Good luck to you friend....tim
