Feel your radiator when the engine is hot, should be hot at the top and cooler as you go down with no cold spots, if you have a cold spot then it is clogged, and it will require cleaning or replacing. Check your thermostatic fan clutch when the engine is hot should be hard to turn, if it free wheels while engine temp is more then normal, it probably needs to be replaced. Hope this helps, let me know

Got a 2001 bmw 316 e46 just put a new expanshon tank on an coolant and its over heating the fan doesn't come on and it boils the coolant and steam comes from under bonnet ?? Any idea where to start (

If your losing coolant water pump may be leaking, not enough coolant will make it overheat. If not that, thermostat may be bad stuck open or shut. Hope this helps

Thermostat or something more

usually when the heat is turned on and temp goes down it means you probably have a bad head gasket leading to the high temp the only way to do this is to have an compression test to see if your heads are leaking.of you did radiator you also did thermostat, and make sure your engine cooling fans are workingto check this just look at your engine while parked let the motor warm up and see if they go on maybe the auto switch on cooling fans are no good
