You've got a sight glass on the bike don't you? Use it. Should take around 4 quarts with a filter change, put 3 in and check the sight glass, add 1/2 quart at a time until it is full.

I have a 05 r1 and with the bike turned to the side it starts right up and i can put it in gear and the back tire will spin, but when i stand the bike up to ride it dies. Any ideas?

Check the clutch cable and adjust it. If its hydrollic then check to insure it is working. The clutch may be Stuck together if the bike has sat for a while.
That is tough to fix.
Place the front wheel against the wall and try putting it in gear.

Lifter noise

There is a tendency for you tohear some noise because they are normally pretty quiet, but just in case you didn't check it out put your hand on the gas cap cover when going down the road. They vibrate after awhile> you might try synthetic oil also, it does quiet them down.

Lifter noise

Could be that the bike has been ridden a little hard; could be dirty oil. Put a cleaning additive in your oil, idle bike for 10 - 15 min drain oil replace filter, add new oil - good stuff- and see if they quiet down.

My 05 r1 has now done 18000 miles and the shock and forks are feeling a bit tired.i dont have the money or the need for an expensive aftermarket race shock.i was thinking of getting a combination fork and...

Change your fork oil to something more suited to your driving style. Those forks may be feeling tired, but they works nearly as hard as your valves. The oil has most likely broken down and needs replacement anyway. Do some shopping and ask the experts what is best for your cruising preferences, If you need a stiffer or softer ride try inserting a new set of springs. Remember coil windings as well as fork oil determine the cushion in your ride.
