Well as far as your starter goes you can either buy a new one for about 300 bucks or you can get like me and get pretty proficient at the rebuilding them it's probably the brushes aren't making contact with the armature pretty simple I use some brushes out of a old starter motor off of a car I had to modify them but they worked not an easy chore though

My maxim will start but sometimes it just clicks as if the battery is dead

If your starter solenoid clicks when you push the starter button, the starter button is good. Try jumping the power from one solenoid post to the other. You can use a jumper cable clamp, a screw driver, or touch the two cables together, this sends power directly to the starter. If the starter works now , then you have a bad solenoid (burnt internal contact points). If you hold the starter button and tap on the starter with a plastic hammer or back of a screw driver and the starter works, then you need new starter brushes. There are no other parts (other than brushes) available for the starter from Yamaha. If the bearings are bad or the armature is shorted you will have to replace the starter as an assembly.

Yamaha maxim xj 700 1985 wont start

Check the wiring inside the headlight case--that's where the wiring for the bar controls are connected into the main wiring harness. Look for loose or corroded connections. Try to get the starter working correctly, then concentrate on getting the engine to run. No-run usually means either no fuel into the cylinders or no spark to ignite the fire. Make sure to keep the battery charged while running the starter for testing.

1985 Yamaha Maxim. starter is going out. How do

First you want to disconnect the positive cable to the starter, than unscrew the 2 bolts holding the starter to the motor, pull them up as far as you can and you will be able to pull the starter out.

1985 Yamaha xj700 Maxim-I am confused about my positive and negative cables.I have a red wire coming from my main harness and a cable on the positive side of the battery does the red wire and the red cable...

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Pls see your other post, but basically:
  • in most, one end of the red wire is connected straight to the battery's + terminal. The other end of the red wire goes to the main fuse;
  • the black of course as you posted goes to the ground;
  • interchanging the 2 wires from the starter relay would make no difference;
  • the starter relay is not directly grounded;
  • the starter relay's + wire goes to the starter button;
  • the starter  relay's - wire goes to starter cut-off activated by safety interlocks (neutral and clutch lever).

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.
