thats a good question vibrations sometimes cause this if its not back firing its not the mixture buddy where is the tank breather located it could be this

is the smell coming from the exhaust also check to make sure nothing is leaking out the pipes then get back to me if not

Take bowl off carby and push float up slowly with finger see if it shuts fuel off if it does than float may have been stuck. If fuel doesn't shut off then maybe replace needle. Hope this helps feel free to contact me further.
