I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee with v8. I changed the water pump and thermostat but it still over heats. Its mostly when I go up a hill though... If I just let it idle it doesn't seem to heat up as bad.

Have you add any additives lately to the radiator. this sometime cause the radiator to get clooged up, another reason. check your fan relay if you got one! and all the radiator hoses need to be purge too along with radiator, or replace radiator.

No I have not added anything... If the radiator was clogged that would cause it to heat up even when it is idling though right? The only time it wants to heat up is going up ahill or if I'm on the highway for a while

You may very well have air in your cooling system.

It is not that difficult a job to get the air out of your car radiator. You don't need professional help for this as its easy enough to be done at home manually. Firstly start your engine with the radiator cap off to avoid building up of pressure and let the engine run for approximately fifteen minutes. Then turn on your heater and turn it up to 'hot'.

This will help circulate the coolant and push out any trapped air. The space that is emptied by the air that has been flushed out could be now used to pour more coolant. Be careful as the air that has been released is quiet hot. Make sure you keep your hands miles away from it as you don't want any injuries. Then you just put the cap back on and wipe of the remaining fluid around it with a cloth or a rag.

I have done that too... I think I may have got a bad thermostat as I hear that is quite common. So im going to just take the thermostat out and see if it will heat up without it and if it does I don't know what else to do other then try a new radiator.

Coolant isn't circulating in the engine of a Jeep 2002 Grand Cherokee V8. Radiator was just replaced as well as the water pump and thermostat.

Hi Jonny, While the engine is cold the thermostat will be closed, allowing coolant circulation around the engine block and cylinder head but not through the radiator. Only when the engine has reached normal operating temperature will circulation be noted in the radiator. A good test is to remove the thermostat while the engine is cold , start the engine with the radiator pressure cap removed and observe flow. If as I suspect it is there, refit the thermostat and check the heat gauge. If all remains well there is no problem. If the engine overheats replace another thermostat. If there is no circulation with the thermostat removed, there is a blockage in the cooling galleries of the engine. If chemical flushing does not clear it, it will require disassembly of the engine with careful step by step inspection at every stage. If the cylinder head(s) had been removed I would suggest making sure of the galleries not being blocked by installing the gaskets incorrectly. Regards John

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Leredo is overheating I changed thermostat also my fan is not working and keeps saying coolnd low and its full and the heat in the car will not run hot it stays cold

Sounds like some type of blockage in the system.
with the car cool open the radiator cap, start the engine to see if the coolant has flow.
Even though you just put in a new thermostat it can still be bad,I've had this happen to me a few times.
If the flow seems slow to nill you can also try removing the thermostat all together and giving that a try.
You can test the thermostat in a boiling pot of water.
If ir is totally not the thermostat then there could be a few cooling chambers blocked in the radiator.
This can be repaired in most cases by a "Rod out" at a local radiator shop.
I think the problem is more twards the thermostat for the reason you stated about your heater.
good luck,Gary.

I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee and its just started overheating after the fan broke, we replaced it then replaced the fan switch relay but not sure what else it could be.

you also have a thermostat that mounts in one of the pipes at the top of the engine and there is also a temperature sensor the other problem is you could have a bad water pump lift your hood and see if there is any rust or liquid coming out of the water pump where the pulley is if the pump dosent circulate water you could over heat

I'm trying to locate the thermostat on my 2000 jeep grand cherokee

  1. On 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7L V8
  2. Remove lower radiator hose clamp and lower radiator hose at thermostat housing.
  3. Remove thermostat housing mounting bolts, thermostat housing and thermostat.

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0l v6
Note:on the In-line 6 4.0L model the thermostat housing is mounted at the top of the engine block next to the water pump.

My 2002 jeep grand cherokee will sometimes over heat when climbing big hills. It has been an intermitten problem. A shop replaced the clutch fan, water pump and thermostat. After repaired ran it well over...

you mention big hills, and other wise no problem, you may be taxing the transmission , have a trans cooler installed, it may cure all your problems, and good for the trans, heat is the trans biggest killer

I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a V8. I

Water pump would never do that. pump either works or doesn't. You should have no heat 'till the engine is warmed up. Engine heats the water. If it was doing this before you changed the thermostat then the old one may have been bad. However, at this point, Id be looking to see if you have it installed with the spring end towards the engine, if the electric fans are coming on and if the radiator is internally obstructed and not flowing properly. You need to re-fill the system with the heat on full hot and the fill cap off to ensure that air purges from the system. If equipped with air bleeds, use them as well. One trick I use to prevent air binding is to warm up the engine to the point that the temperature is just below where it normally runs at. Turn the engine off and wait about three minutes for the stat to open and then begin filling slowly till it's full.(running) Used to be you could check radiator flow by putting your hand on it in different spots when hot. Cold spots would be where flow is restricted. Today radiators are not easily reached but most good shops use a heat sensing gun to check this. If your radiator fills through a cap on the radiator if you need to dribble coolant in or it backs up, that is a good indication that the radiator is obstructed as well (providing t stat is working.)

How do I change the thermostat in a 2000 jeep grand cherokee 2000 Jeep grand Cherokee is over heating when idling. It was recommended to me to change the thermostat but I do not know how and am unable to...

follow top radiator hose from radiator to engine wear hose ends, it will be clamped to whats called the gooseneck, thermostat is under that. you will have to drain coolant, not all, maybe 1 half gal. before you remove it. 2 bolts new gasget new thermostat, just remember spring on new thermostat goes in engine.
