I have a 1992 Pontiac Firebird 3.1L V6 that is difficult to start and when it starts it wont hold the idle. The ignition control module was tested and is good. Replaced fuel filter, ignition rotor, distributor cap, and all 6 spark plugs. EGR valves move freely. fuel pressure diaphram does not appear to leak.

How long since a tune-up? Include air filter, fuel filter, gas injector cleaner...Also check the Idle Air Control valve on your 3.4 V-6...It can be dirty or clogged over time...Located on the air intake plenum...your auto parts store can also show you a diagram...Fuel pressure must be constant also, your Firebird is worth having the fuel pressure regulator checked, as well as the fuel pump...
Cabon deposits in the throttle bore and on the throttle plate will limit airflow at idle and make a reset difficult. The throttle bore must be clean first. Carbon deposits on the idle control motor can impede this process also, but they do not take kindly to a liberal cleaning. I would recommend a new iac motor unless it has already been replaced.
check the ignition control module and the crank sensor. the way it sounds is the module you can have it tested once you remove it crank sensor a little harder and can not be tested. mounted behind crankshaft pulley.
Possibly a weak fuel pump, idle air control valve, vacuum leaks, or loose or damaged wiring in the ignition system. Check for vacuum leaks first. That's the only one that won't cost anything. Make sure all intake bolts are tight, and all hoses are connected properly and in good condition.
more likely it is a fault with the ignition, possible crank sensor or defective ignition module. Have u tested it for trouble codes? if not go to Kragen auto or Autozone they do the test for free.
