failed mot as no reserve travel on voyager. no obvious adjustment anywhere. Also after removing rear caliper and pads how does the drum come off ?. are there brake shoes inside that can be replaced or adjusted.

There is actually an adjustment BUT it is a pain as it is a spring slack remover UNDER the centre console, You can as I did grind a small amount of metal from the rathet designed to help remove the slack, and this then allows you to manully back of the Handbrake, remove slack from the drums as per normal and then reset the Handbrake, this is a BIG problem for owner\'s required to pass strict inspections regularly.

I had the same problem with my crysler voyager 1997,a friend of mine who is a mechanic found the problem,it is a self adjuster on the handbrake itself, once drums are adjusted up you need to go to your hanbrake area and you will find a white plastic clip on the bottom of the lever ,once removed you pull up your handbrake a few times and it self adjusts, then put the plastic clip back on,this soved my problem,by doing this my handbrake went from about 13 clicks on max to hold . to about 6 clicks and held perfectly

I had the same problem on a 1998. I found the problem to be a rusty part which is inside the drum at the to of the brake shoes. The part that has a small arm exiting the drum and which the cable is connected to. The arm was completely stuck due to rust and after treatment with rust remover everything worked as normal. I also found that the brake handle itself is selfadjusting on my car. Once the handle is lifted, already before the first click, there is a spring system that locks the cable to take away any slack.

I looked but mine does not have that clip,. I am guessing it may have been lost or removed in the past (as my handbrake never worked since I got the car), Does anyone have a picture of this in situ so that I have an idea of what I need?

As above, two or four screws hold on the plastic tray around the handbrake, pull that off, pull white clip out, pull hand brake up, literally pull the slack by hand and pull the lever up and put the clip back.

I have read that applying the handbrake sharply (8-10 times) whilst reversing at a crawl will auto adjust the handbrake provided the adjustment at the wheel is correct. I tried this successfully with my 2007 Grand Voyager which has rear disks with internal drums for the handbrake. I was lazy though and didn't check the adjustment at the wheel first. The handbrake travel was greatly reduced and felt tighter. However, at my MOT I found that the handbrake was still ineffective on the offside rear wheel (how could I have known?!) so I had to hunt for the star adjuster on that wheel. There is a rubber bung on the rear face of the wheel/bake plate. Once I removed the bung, due to poor access all I could see was a spring but the star adjuster was just below the spring. I had to blindly turn the star adjuster with a small flat blade screwdriver. By trial and error I found that turning the adjuster downwards increased the handbrake effectiveness on that wheel but not sure if it is the same for the nearside wheel. Do the adjustment with the handbrake off and adjust until its difficult to turn the wheel by hand, then back it off a tiny bit until it is barely catching. Good luck!

I have a 2003 voyager. It has been for an Mot and no advisors apart from failed on hand break. They said it didn't hold efficently. Took it to the garage who said it needed adjusting. Charged me to adjust and told me to go for a retest. It failed again on exactly the same problem but this time the Mot tester commented that it was actually worse than the previous test a couple of days earlier before the mechanic had adjusted it. The garage are now saying I need new shoes and disks but the Mot tester said there is nothing wrong with my breaks themselves . Does anyone have any ideas what's going on? I need the car for work and have now been without it a week

I had the same problem on a 1998. I had some slack of the cables and initialy tried to add some spacers to take up the slack. I found the problem to be a rusty part which is inside the drum at the top of the brake shoes. The part that has a small arm exiting the drum and which the cable is connected to. The arm was completely stuck due to rust and after treatment with rust remover everything worked as normal. I also found that the brake handle itself is selfadjusting on my car. The cable connection drum inside the handle is spring loaded to take up slack. Normally the drum can move freely. Once the handle is lifted, already before the first click, there is another spring system that locks the cable drum so that it moves together with the handle and keeps the cable tight..

I DISCONNECTED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE CABLE FROM THE LEVER AND CANT GET IT BACK ON

I'm assuming you've been replacing the brake shoes in the hand brake. Rear drum brakes are designed to automatically adjust for slack as they wear. You will have to wind back the adjusters in both rear drums and the threaded adjuster on the lever end of the cable. This should give you enough slack to reconnect it.
**Chock the wheels or put the vehicle on axle stands BEFORE you do this.**
Wind the lever end adjuster back to approximately half way. Pull the lever to the correct 'On' position. Rewind BOTH rear drum adjusters back into a position where they grip the drum firmly but spins freely when the hand brake is released. With the hand brake off spin the drum. You should be able to hear a very faint noise as the drum skims the shoes.

Why 2010 toyota corolla rear wheels wont spin after replacing drums and shoes?

you should have backed off the e-brakes before you installed new shoes. if you had to hammer the drums on that should have been a clue that you did something wrong. you will have to get the drums off some way and check to make sure you didn`t install something in the wrong way.

Adjusting Kia rio handbrake cable

The brake drum does not fit due to the pressure in brake cylinders. Some of the cylinders are designed to keep a little pressure on, even when the pedal is released. The reason is that you will have instant reaction on pushing break pedal because there is no free space between drum and pads. You need to take clamp and push the pistons back in cylinder, but only that much so you can fit the drum. After the drum is tightened you must pump the brake pedal until you can fell that there is no free fall. The hand brake should be ok, but check it just to be shore. If there is need to tension the cable, it can be done under lever from outside the car (you must go under the car).

Cant get drum back on how do I adjust the brake pads

The brake shoes can be adjusted inward by the self-adjusting mechanism at the bottom of the shoes. Turn the adjuster wheel so the shoes will just fit inside the drum. After you get the drum on, use a screwdriver through the slot on back of brake plate to turn the adjuster wheel enough clicks outward to where the shoes are just away from the drum. Turn the drum by hand. When shoes are out enough without stopping the drum, you have it right. When all done and testing out, the self-adjusters will set adjustment by backing in reverse and hitting the brakes. Do this two or three times-you may hear the self-adjusting wheel click with each time- it is adjusting the shoes to the proper distance from the drum.

How do I get to the parking brake adjusting nut under the center console of a 2001 honda accord LX

If handbrake has excessive travel and the brake pedal is low then you havent set the rear brakes up properly ,if a drum then you clean the lip on the edge of the drum so it has a bevel then you manually adjust the auto adjuster till the drum just slides over then tap outer edge of drum wth a small hammer to level the shoes and then see if you can then adjust the auto adjuster up a bit more .Also when taking the drum off again make sure that the handbrake mechanism lever is right back ,Now if you adjust the brakes on the handbrake cable then it will be out of square and will not work on a brake roller tester ,and the footbrake will still feel spongey then you get a inspection failure for excessive pedal travel and low handbrake efficiency ,this model of car should be able to lock the rear brakes up at 30mph when jerking the handbrake up hard and it shouldnt have more than 3 clicks when done correctly

Noticing a little more travel on brake pedal and handbrake lever and wonder whether some adjustment can be made to reduce this travel on brake pedal

your rear brakes are worn or the self adjusters are rusted, assuming you have drum rear brakes & not disc pads in the rear.
Try backing up several times with very hard stops to activate the self adjusters. If you don't back up much, the self adjusters can not work. Parking brake will be adjusted at the same time.

Just replaced rear brake shoes--parking brake feels like it is not tight enough when engagaed--

The brake shoes need adjusting. Disengage the parking brake.
Before fitting new shoes you should slack off the parking brake cable completely. Locate the adjuster(just follow the parking brake cable. Undo the locknut and slack off the cable.
Remove the rear wheels and drums again. You will find a screw-in type adjuster between the shoes. Turn the adjuster to increase the distance between the shoes. The left and right wheel's adjusters turn in opposite directions to achieve the same result. Fit the drum to see if it slides over the pads easily. Do so until you start having diffyculty sliding the drum over the shoes. Fit the drum and rotate it. You should not hear any scraping or have any resistance on the drum when it is rotated. Refit the wheels. Test the parking brake. If it is still too slack adjust the cable under the car until you when you engage the parking brake it engages fully after 3-5 clicks.

Rear brake on 2002 hyundia accent

hi from uk after supporting car on stand or blocks ? remove wheel then you will see x head screwsx2 remove screws then release handbrake drum should now rotate freely you may need to lightly but firmly tap the drum off the hub if you have an old vac ? use it to vac the dust from shoes and drum ? if your shoes are ok ? then make sure the auto adjuster is free and clean? if your h/brake travel is high and the reason for checking brakes? then notch up auto adjuster a couple of clicks at atime whilst keep trying the drum fits so the shoes are just enabling rotation of drum by hand then press b/pedal a cople of times to centralise shoes to drum ? if drum still rotates freely with no binding on shoes ? then re assemble carry out same proceedure on other side ? do not adjust brake cable! unless you do adjustment as above you may/will find your h/brake is better /less travel ? also your foot brake will feel better and less travel ? hope this helps you but if you req further info/assistance by all means come back to board best wishes from lancashire uk

Handbrake problem

hi fro uk when you reassembled brake shoes? did you notice the tubular bar just below b/cylinder? it fits between the two shoes and has a toothed wheel on the treaded side(l/h) this is the auto adjuster ie as tooth wheel is rotated it extends the treaded side thus adjusting shoes to drum o/k? this is normally done auto by the small lever below but when fitting new shoes you must adjust this rod with tooth wheel and keep trying drum fitting when you can fit drum /just? fit and press brake to centralise shoes to drum then adjust again if req'd so that drum fits and rotates withh shoes not binding ?? do both sides THENyou willdrums fitted you will feel b/pedal is improved ie less travel on braking ? SO FIRST THING YOU HAVE TO DO IS SLACKEN OFF H/BRAKE CABLE ADJUSTMENT /SLACK ? then proceed with the above instruction afterwards if you do as above then you pull h/brake up one notch ? then adust slack from cable to light tension release h/brake and ensure wheels rotate freely when you apply h/brake it should hold on approx four//five notch ? hope this helps
