1996 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 MPI. need a fuel pressure regulator that apparently is an integral part of fuel pump/sending unit. jeep no longer makes them. can only buy pump.?? is the regulator IN THE PUMP???

    O.K. I'm having a problem maintaining fuel pressure, especially after a short trip. cannot buy whole assembly as they are no longer being produced. replaced fuel filter and checked for leaks (vacuum/fuel) and could not find any. I can only buy pump without sending unit. IS it possible to build from parts or IS THE REGULATOR INTERNALLY IN THE PUMP?

Hi,

Lets start with technical bulletin how to determine whether fuel pressure regulator is at fault or not :-

FUEL PUMP PRESSURE TEST - ALL ENGINES WITH PRESSURE TEST PORT

Use this test in conjunction with the Fuel Pump Capacity Test, Fuel Pressure Leak Down Test and Fuel Pump Amperage Test found elsewhere in this group.

Check Valve Operation: The electric fuel pump outlet contains a one-way check valve to prevent fuel flow back into the tank and to maintain fuel supply line pressure (engine warm) when pump is not operational. It is also used to keep the fuel supply line full of gasoline when pump is not operational. After the vehicle has cooled down, fuel pressure may drop to 0 psi (cold fluid contracts), but liquid gasoline will remain in fuel supply line between the check valve and fuel injectors. Fuel pressure that has dropped to 0 psi on a cooled down vehicle (engine off) is a normal condition. When the electric fuel pump is activated, fuel pressure should immediately (1 - 2 seconds) rise to specification.

All fuel systems are equipped with a fuel tank module mounted, combination fuel filter/fuel pressure regulator. The fuel pressure regulator is not controlled by engine vacuum.

WARNING: THE FUEL SYSTEM IS UNDER CONSTANT FUEL PRESSURE EVEN WITH THE ENGINE OFF. BEFORE DISCONNECTING FUEL LINE AT FUEL RAIL, THIS PRESSURE MUST BE RELEASED. REFER TO THE FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE PROCEDURE.

1. Remove protective cap at fuel rail test port. Connect the 0 - 414 kPa (0-60 psi) fuel pressure gauge (from gauge set 5069) to test port pressure fitting on fuel rail
2. Start and warm engine and note pressure gauge reading. Fuel pressure should be 339 kPa ± 34 kPa (49.2 psi ± 5 psi) at idle.
3. If engine runs, but pressure is below 44.2 psi, check for a kinked fuel supply line somewhere between fuel rail and fuel pump module. If line is not kinked, but specifications for either the Fuel Pump Capacity, Fuel Pump Amperage or Fuel Pressure Leak Down Tests were not met, replace fuel pump module assembly.
4. If operating pressure is above 54.2 psi, electric fuel pump is OK, but fuel pressure regulator is defective. Replace fuel filter/fuel pressure regulator. .
5. Install protective cap to fuel rail test port.

Now,

The fuel pressure regulator is part of the fuel pump, it is in the fuel tank.

On this vehicle the regulator is part of the pump and not serviceable separately so if the regulator is bad the whole pump assembly will need to be replaced.

    Ans. Regulator is a part of the pump. It cannot be build from the parts and you need to replace the COMPLETE PUMP ASSEMBLY .

    This is wrong! The regulator CAN be changed. You must remove the fuel pump assembly from the tank, remove and replace regulator....reinstall pump assembly in tank. Be sure to get a 49lbs regulator for 1996 cherokee.

Its mounted on the fuel rail, has a vacuum hose hooked to it. only ten to twenty bucks on ebay. but those have an issue with long crank times after sitting a while. (i have one and worked at jeep dealer for ten years)
the fix is a new fuel pump module because the check valve in them goes bad, trouble is that rarely fixes them. i just deal with it myself, not worth the hassle

Fuel pressure 1998 jeep grand cherokee 4.0 L V6

You should have a test port on the Fuel Supply rail, use a tool from a local auto parts "Tool Loaner program" where you can borrow tools for free,w/a deposit of course,then follow the steps provided;

MPI Fuel System Pressure Test

The MPI fuel system used in vehicles equipped with a 4.OL engine employs a vacuum balanced pressure regulator. Fuel pressure should be approximately 55-69 kPa (8-10 psi) lower with the vacuum line attached to the regulator than with the vacuum line disconnected. System fuel should be 214 kPa (31 psi) with the vacuum line connected to the regulator and 269 kPa (39 psi) with the vacuum line disconnected. CAUTION: Some fuel may be discharged when connecting fuel gauge to fuel rail.
  1. Connect a 0-414 kPa (0-60 psi) fuel pressure gauge to test port pressure fitting on fuel rail (Fig. 7).
  2. Remove vacuum line from pressure regulator.
  3. Start the vehicle.
  4. Note gauge reading. With vacuum line disconnected, fuel pressure should be approximately 269 kPa (39 psi).
  5. Connect vacuum line to pressure regulator. Note gauge reading. Fuel pressure should be approximately 214 kPa (31 psi).
  6. If fuel pressure is not approximately 55-69 kPa (8-10 psi) higher with vacuum line removed from regulator, inspect pressure regulator vacuum line for leaks, kinks or blockage. CAUTION: Fuel pressure will rise to as much as 655 kPa (95 psi) when the fuel return tine is pinched shut, shut engine down immediately after pinching oft fuel return line.
  7. If fuel pressure is low, momentarily pinch shut the hose section of the fuel return line. If fuel pressure remains low, inspect the fuel supply line, fuel filter, and fuel rail inlet for blockage. If fuel pressure rises replace fuel pressure regulator.
  8. If fuel pressure is above specifications, inspect the fuel return line for kinks and blockage.

Capacity Test

  1. Remove the cap from the pressure test port in the fuel rail.
  2. Connect a 0-414 kPa (0-60 psi) fuel pressure gauge to the pressure fitting on the fuel rail (Fig. 7).
  3. Start the vehicle. Pressure should be approxi- mately 214 kPa (31 psi) with the vacuum hose connected to the pressure regulator and 269 kPa (39 psi) with the vacuum hose removed from the pressure regulator.
  4. If the pressure is not to specification, check the following before replacing the fuel pressure regulator:
  • 4a - Inspect the fuel supply and return lines/hoses for kinks or restricting bends
  • 4b - Check the fuel pump flow rate. A good fuel pump will deliver at least 1 liter of fuel per minute with the fuel return line pinched off. If the fuel pump does not pump adequately, then inspect the fuel system for a plugged fuel filter or fuel pump inlet filter (sock). Fuel pump flow rate can be done by connecting one end of an old A/C gauge hose to the fuel test port on the fuel rail and inserting the other end of the hose into a container of at least 1 liter capacity. Run the fuel pump by installing a jumper wire into diagnostic connector terminals D1-5 and D1-6. Be sure to pinch off the fuel return line or most of the fuel will be returned to the fuel tank.

1996 jeep grand cherokee oil pressure gauge flutters car wont run

If the oil pressure is not above 5 or 10psi, the fuel pump will not get power. The engine should start and die.
The pressure sending unit may be faulty, or the engine oil pressure may be very low.

your filter is on top of the fuel pump and sending unit at the tank. filter is now part of the pressure regulator.

Fuel Pump on 1997 Jeep cherokee country comes on with key, but no fuel to fuel rail???

If you can crack open the connection at the tank, I would do that to see if there is fuel getting past the filter/regulator. The fuel pressure regulator is an integral component of the fuel filter, which is mounted on top of the fuel pump module, located in the fuel tank. When the fuel filter/regulator assembly requires service, the fuel tank must be removed from the vehicle, however, the fuel pump module does not need to be removed.
If there is no fuel at the connection to the tank, the regulator has likely failed or perhaps the pump impeller has failed. Please let us know if you have more questions.

Where is the gas regulator located on a 1996 jeep cherokee (2wd) ? Why is my jeep turning off and want start, until it sits for awhile; I have change the fuel filter and fuel pump?

You meant the fuel pressure regulator? It is located on the fuel rail and has vacuum attached to it. This is not the problem with your car tho. Check the ignition module, and the ignition coil.

My 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a no start problem. I have tested the fuel pump and it is fine. However, there is no fuel pressure at the fuel rail.

If pump is running, then two other places to look are the fuel filter and regulator. GC of that year may either have regulator on fuel rail and filter in line near l/r wheel, or both as one unit on the tank on top of the sending unit.

How do you replace a fuel pump in a 1996 Jeep Cherokee 4L V6?

Fuel pump is located in the fuel tank.The tank has to be removed and then the fuel pump and sending unit removed. Then the pump is replaced. Does this help?

no man its the sending unit in the tank.. the diafram is bad in the pump thats why your loosing pressure... not to bad of a fix...good luck keith...
