Hi: My Z4 roof (soft top) won't go down, I am sure that it is the hydraulic pump, maybe all it needs is some oil added. But the issue is, getting the roof off, does any of the "experts" have any detail on how to remove the roof without distroying it. Thanks Bill

My 2003 Z4's roof is not coming down. The roof has to be removed so I can get to the accuator pump. Does anyone of the experts know how to remove the roof from the car??? I saw a picture from one of your experts with the roof on the garage floor and he quoted that it took him only two hours to remove it. If that person is available to assist me, please let me know??
    Thanks Bill

I have a 2003 Z4 and the roof has to come off to add hydraulic fluid or possibly change out the actuator that raises and lowers the roof. To do this I have to remove the roof from the car to get access. I would hope that someone can give me some direction on how to do this.
    Thanks Bill

There is micro switch is located in the luggage compartment (trunk), what it does is prevent the convertible top from being opened if the shelf in the truck is in the raised position. If the shelf is in the raised position it allows more room in the trunk.
To start with look inside the truck towards the top on both sides of the shelf and you will notice trunk knobs and they almost look like gas burner knobs on an outdoor gas grill, when you turn the knobs one direction the shelf will raise when you turn them the other direction the shelf will lower. Make sure the shelf is in the lowest position and try it again, if that doesn't correct it put the shelf in the raised position and look under the shelf towards the front of the car (where your seat backs would be if you could see them) and you should see the micro switch, how it works is that there is a little tab on the shelf and when you lower the shelf it is supposed to make contact with the switch which tells the system the shelf is lowered and the top can now be opened.
Let me know if that doesn't correct the problem.
When you press the open button does your windows lower half way and the top release from the windshield? If so, you will be able to see it raise about a 1/4" from the windshield (un-seal from the windshield) and when you push up in the center of the top (at the winshield) it will move away from the windshield.
There is also the hyd. release valve that is located in the truck as well and if it was pulled and turned 90 degrees by mistake (little red handle in the upper left hand corner of the truck if you are facing into the truck) it will prevent the hyd. pump from working, however the windows will still lower and it will release from the windshield.

Hi, thanks for the solution, but unfortunately I am a little past that, I have determined that the roof has to come off the car. Removed from the car so that in behind the passenger seat trunk area I can get to the hydraulic pump. The question is how to I get the roof off. I started yesterday to do this after removing two torx bolts from the hinge that lift the roof or lowers the roof. I believe I saw the roof laying on a garage floor on one of the experts suggestion about replacing the hydraulic pump or topping it up. But unfortunately he never went into how to remove the roof from the car. The mechanical part seems easy, but removing the roof looks a bit more complicated.

    Thanks Bill

I gave it a shot, but removing the roof is nothing I can help you with to be honest.

Hi,

This could a problem with micro switch. The micro switch is located in the luggage compartment (trunk), what it does is prevent the convertible top from being opened if the shelf in the truck is in the raised position. If the shelf is in the raised position it allows more room in the trunk.

You could try to assist it as you hold the button and apply mild pressure to see if it will help the hydraulics to move. If you wait 10 minutes after opening the cowl the pressure should bleed off(with key out). Then with the aid of another person carefully move the top in the down position.
Just as a heads up. The normal failure of these tops is the hydraulic motor due to water seeping into the motor casing. In order to access the hydaulic motor the entire top must be removed completely.

Here are the instructions that might help.

Opening/closing convertible top in event of a technical fault

• Open rear lid.
• Pull knob (1) towards rear on luggage compartment panel.

Convertible top hydraulics:

First check the luggage area to see if it is in the correct position and then check the microswitch. Click on the link below to read more:

If it goes down, the motor and pump works. Your most likely looking at the control module or a sensor. Have the codes read for the top module.

Soft roof does not open

Find the two plastic caps sitting behind the sun visor on either side of the car. Gently prise them out, be careful as years of sun may have made them brittle. Behind the caps you should see a hexagonal head that the manual roof tool fits into (failing that use an allen key). Turning these hex heads will unlock the front soft top locks. (can't recall if it was clockwise or anti-clockwise, so be careful!). I found that you need to start one side, then unlock the other side, then come back to the first side and finish the job off. At this stage you should be able to lift the top up slightly to see it's no longer engaged in the front locks. Now move to the boot.

In the back of the boot you should see two small pieces of the trim that will lift out. These will be located on each side near the boot hinge mechanisms. Lift the trim peices out and you should see a lever (mine is made from cad plated something or other, ie it's a gold colour) and it will have red paint on it.

Fit the spanner/wrench end of the manual roof tool, or otherwise a 10mm open ended spanner, onto the small nut welded into the end of that red lever. I started on the left side(passenger side), levering gently down will unlock, and gently up will lock). You may need to alternate between each side, undoing a little and then swapping. NOTE: I found the levers won't budge unless the soft or hard top 'pins' are physically sitting in the lock holes. Don't force the levers as they should move quite easily.

Now that you have both the front and back locks undone, the last part is to unlock the tonneau or rear deck (soft top roof compartment). To do this you need the 10mm spanner/wrench again. You will find two hex heads tucked down in between the roll bar and the side of the interior trim (about 6-8 inches from the door frames), fit the spanner onto the head and turn until the tonneau cover releases. You should now be able to fold the soft top down by first raising the rear section of the soft top until the back lip is pointing to the sky, then lift the front section along with the rear section down into the compartment. I guess getting it back out is a reverse of the procedure above. Hoepfully I've got it all right as I've done it from memory.

I HAVE A 1995 M B 500 SL THE SWITCH INDICATOR FOR THE TOP & ROLL BAR STAY IN A BLINKING POSITION. THE TOP, POWER WINDOWS AND ROLL BAR WILL NOT FUNCTION AT ALL... THANK YOU

The control module has set a fault and it will have to be reset. They are sensitive to voltage & must have 12 volts to operate properly.
The windows and top will need to be resync. I cannot find any information regarding the diagnostic procedure for the roof .. it states there is a procedure to diagnose the fault with the number of flashes the switch makes .. a dealer may be your best option on this fault .. I hope this helps some.

Hello, where its located the soft top relay in my clk 320 2001. Not opening THANKS!!!!!!!!!! Leo

is your soft top not working it's not the faulty relay, it's control by electronic control unit, it's call soft top control unit, so first do one thing, open boot and have a look, there are one separation lid which is winding like cover, you must have close your boot separation lid buy pulling it out and hang it on hook which is locate both side back in boot, there are two hooks for hookup the separation roller lid,you pull it out and hookup it on two hooks, and close boot then operate roof if still roof not working it's need to be diagnose because there are many sensors and switches are fitted in this system if one switch or sensor not work your roof will not longer be opening and also there are any hydraulic oil leaking or lack of oil in the pump, it will not work, so in this case you must drive your car to the authorized Mercedes workshop who have the right diagnose tool knowledge for this particular car,

How do you add oil to the convertable motor?

On a z4 the whole top has to be removed to add oil. The hydraulic pump is connected to the top in the drivers side b-pillar; Usually the convertible top motor will end up being submerged in water because the drains get clogged. I would recommend taking the vehicle to your local bmw dealership

Hydraulic pump automatic roof

I've done it 2 ways:
1st - loosen the pump assy - nuts on either end, then unscrew the plastic bottle. This is a pain unless your hands are the size of a baby's!
2nd - undo the nut on the side of the pump assy. (looks brass, from memory and is about a 13mm) and this uncovers a hole which leads into the top of the bottle. Then use a small hose and syringe to refill. This can get messy but was slightly easier than the first method.
