92 dodge spirit timing marks 2.5 - 1992 Dodge Spirit

Using a flashlight/torch, locate and view the crankshaft pulley. There will be some small marks on there, or perhaps just one. Align the first mark on the pulley with the 0 degree pointer on the timing case. That is TDC.

You need a HAYNES or CHILTON manual, that shows the timing marks on the gears and how to properly adjust the chain tension by using a certain thickness shim.

The belt tensioner is automatic, to set the initial tension install the belt rotate the engine with the tensioner adjustment bolt loose but the belt tension snug, then rotate the engine a few degrees until belt tensioner takes up the slake and tighten it down. Recheck the timing marks to make sure they are correct, then rotate the engine by hand a fulkl 360 degrees and check again for tension and timing marks being on the mark You are done

You need to use a strobe light to set the timing. The timing mark of the crank /flywheel is marked and so the strobe must be triggered from the first plug.
The changes on the timing can be adjusted on the distributor to set the timing to coincide with the correct mark specified as the stobe flashes to show the mark being constant.

We keep a copy of a Haynes manual with each of our vehicles and I can recommend them as containing the info any home-mechanic can use. You can probably find them a little cheaper if you shop around but this will give you the basic details:
