Mass airflow sensors commonly go bad on these vw's and can give you lots of low power problems. If the car has been tuned up and not running poorly I would start there.

I agree with the fuel filter-also under the air filter there is a screen that clogs sometimes cutting air flow. The assumption is that the air filter is not clogged. If it is near 100,000 and the intake has not been cleaned it could be clogged.

SOURCE: My volkswagon jetta TDI loses

this may not be the answer you want but as all vw product are computer controlled you are best to get a diagnostic done at a dealer that has the machine(a proper vw one)you dont have to get them to do the work but its so simple once diagnosed correctly.....and a small price to get the correct info first time.
you can buy the all in one type, but they are not available here in the U.K.so i dont know if they are any good...
i am a fully qualified technition but still go to my local dealer for it to be done(cheaper than buying a diagnostic )

SOURCE: I have a 2002 volkswagon jetta and the abs system

I recommend taking it to a shop ASAP. It's safe until you need the ABS system, such as in a skid, then it's not there to stop the skid.
