P0442 OBD-II Trouble Code - Evaporative Emission Control System Leak
Detected (small leak)
What does that mean?
This indicates a
fuel vapor leak in the EVAP control system. It means a very small leak
has been detected. In fact, the leak can be from a hole as small as
0.04" in diameter. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the
escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are
routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the
engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to
siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.
Symptoms
You
likely won't notice any drivability problems.
Causes
A
code P0442 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
* A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
* A non-conforming
gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
* A small leak/hole in a
fuel vapor hose/tube
* Other small leak in EVAP system
*
Faulty vent o-ring seal
Possible Solutions
With a P0442,
the most common repair is to:
* Remove and reinstall the gas cap,
clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
* Otherwise, replace the gas cap, or
* Inspect the EVAP
system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses

How do you detect that size of a hole. With what kind of detection to let you know where it is. On a tire. I would put water to see some bubbles. But on this. What is use?

Our P0442 kept coming up on a Toyota Sienna 2001. Performance was unaffected of course but Texas State Inspection would not pass it. Topping off the tank had caused damage (crack) in the carbon canister near the fuel tank. Not hard to reach and change (1 cover plate) The cost was nasty though ($200+) Advice? DON'T TOP OFF. I would reiterate trying all the cheaper things first of course - gas cap, valves, hoses. The testing algorithms in the ECM are quite involved to finally work out that you have fixed it too!

on canister they replace both valves with canister but the say
442 is a small leak in systems ck for damage hose or broken valve

lately in the rear maybe pulled on hose.alao don't. Overfill
tank kills the emmision valves can't dry them out
On the camrys....its was a pattern failure for the vent solenoids and canister to go bad under the rear end of the car,charcoal comes out of rthe canister and get in the solenoid and holds it open just a little bit and produces a evap code. hope this helps

In summary: if you use a K&N air filter, you probably accidentally over-oiled one time in the past. The Mass airflow sensor is easy to remove (little oily) and quick to check with a flashlight. Look inside make sure the 2 resistors dont look like fuzzy tonsils. Clean with a gentle electronics cleaner. (dont touch them with anything like a ear swab, even if it's tempting). Change/clean the K&N air filter and then re-install the Mass Airflow Sensor. Clear the code and you should be good to go.
Just for grins also only use a factory certified gas cap. They're cheap and will save you many dollars in sensor troubleshooting.
