1995 Diesel Suburban fuel obstruction

1995 Diesel Suburban starts well and after a mile or so when accelerator is applied, engine cuts out. Wait for a minute or so and it will start again and limp along. It feels like a fuel obstruction.

I ran out of diesel a couple of months ago and refilled with a contaminated can. At the end of fueling, I noticed some zinc flecks from the corroded interior of the gas can. ( I should have checked first).

Could plug be at mouth of in take sending unit? Fuel pump strainer?

1995 gmc 2500 suburban 454cid on hard acceleration the injectors start flowing freely then cut out completely then start again causing hard detonation and rpm not to exceed 2300. I replaced the fuel pump...

Sounds almost like a fuel pressure regulator. It is located at the begining of the fuel rails, right where the gas comes to the motor. It controls the amount of fuel going to the motor, and could cause injectors to act funny, and flood the motor during acceleration.

Good Luck and Thanks for using FixYa!!

Ran out of diesel 1.9 TDi 74kw. have refuelled and cranked engine for 15mins and still it won't start. there is fuel from tank to filter, to pump and return flow.

This is very important for Audi 1.9 TDI engine: IT IS FORBIDDEN TO RUN WITHOUT DIESEL FUEL IN RESERVOIR !!!
This type of engine is equipped with pump-nozzle injectors which develop up to 2050 bar injection pressure !
Remove the fuel filter, fill up with diesel fuel and put in place. After that try to start the engine with accelerator pedal to the floor. Heed of electric starter motor temperature and battery status! After 40 - 50 sec. of start attempting wait for 1 - 2 minutes for battery and electric starter motor revival. After few starting attemptions the engine must start.

1994 Suburban not accelerating after fuel pump replacement

That was my first thought as well... replace the fuel filter to increase fuel flow to keep up with the higher speeds and acceleration.

I have a 99 suburban that has 203,000 miles. It has developed a problem of taking a while to start. I have replaced fuel pump twice, the latest was about 3-4 years back. I have not checked pressures but...

I believe you have a fuel regulator weak or dirty injectors.
Try turning the key to the "on" position ( do not try and start) wait until fuel pump stops running (3-5 seconds or so ), turn the key off and immediatly repeat for 3 cycles. On the 4th key rotation, start the vehicle. Does it seem to start up faster?
If so, the regulator is weak, however, the fuel pump does have a check valve in it to prevent fuel from leaking back into the pump and maintain line pressure.
Try the diagnostic proceedure above first and we can go from there.
Good luck, let me know.
