You should have an h7 bulb, once to take the rubber grommet behind the headlight, you will see the h7 socket, which has to wires in it, gently pull thi socket off, then there is a small wire holding the bulb in place, gently unhook the wire from the one side. and turn it to the other side and the bulb shoudl come out... replace the bulb putting it in the same way the other bulb came out.. notice the h7 bulb has a small notch on one side. it has to go in the same way or the wire will not hook back on. once it has been placed, turn the wire over the base of the bulb and hook it again, then put the socket back on the bulb and put the grommet back on the headlight.
The wire KrazyKD is referring to is just hooked behind the screw, in the 2009 City Golf this wire leans forward to allow the bulb to come out. Press the wire down and the clip should come out. If you're doing the driver-side bulb, you may have to remove the battery for visibility. Try to avoid touching the bulb with your fingers hold it exclusively from the socket otherwise you may damage the bulb. Here's a picture of the wire to help you

The wire needs to be pushed towards the front of the car and to the right (when facing the car).

This is how i did my 2009 city golf. Almost identical to the way sam dodge did it with a slight twist at the end. Pop the hood and turn the plastic housing cover counter-clockwise and remove. On the driver's side you will notice there's a plastic cover located between the battery and bumper (you will notice the image of a light bulb engraved in the plastic) that can be removed with a philips screwdriver. After the housing cover has been removed, you must unplug the bulb by removing the small black rectangular unit attached to the wires. Now you will notice a clamp that resembles a paper clip. With my car, the silver clamp was hooked in from the top, not the sides. To remove it: pull the clip down and out, completely freeing the bulb thus allowing you to remove and replace it. I would recommend changing the passengers side first as you will have a little more room and a better view of what is going on.

There is a light cover in front of the battery... take this off and then look for the metal clamps holding the light housing in. (I say clamps, but they're more like glorified paper clips on either side of the fixture.) Press in on each side, pushing the clamps towards each other and pull the fixture out.

awkward to get at if you use a mirror to see where the bulb sits in and spring clip mounts
