My 2001 celica refuses to stay in fourth gear for more thatn a few seconds. If I hold it, it stays put until I shift into third or fifth, but it doesn't seem to like fourth.

I have a 2001 ford escape FWD with 5 speed manuel transmission thats having issues shifting gears.s

It could be the clutch or transmission. Having a transmission rebuilt can be more cost effective than a whole new one. You will have to check out what's available to you and consult your budget for the repair.

Change shift linkage on 93 sentra

More than likely it's not the linkage. Sounds like the fourth to fifth synchronizer is very badly worn, which will cause the shifter to "pop out" of fifth gear.

Check first the fluid if it needs replacing or you may need to add more. Dirt in the fluid may be a sign that the valve for the 3rd gear may be dirty or full of debris. If one gear is dirty normally the next gears are affected.
