My old disel isn't as fancy as your Jag :) but I had a problem like this and it was worse when the weather is cold. I found that 5 out of 6 of my glow plugs had gone. It also used to blow a huge belch of black smoke when it started. Once going it ran normally.

To test my glow plugs I just disconnected the wirre and checkd for continuity with a multi meter from the terminal to the engine block. If the connection is open the plug has blown. Mine glow plugs wern't much harder to change than a spark plug.

Hope this helps

Check into glow plugs, sounds like some are not working.

2005 (Dec) Jaguar X-Type 2.0 Diesel. It starts with rough idle 500-600 rpm for 2-3 seconds. and after jumps to 850 - 900 rpm and then drives perfectly.

Question edited for clarity and translated into written English.
Question moved from Ford to Jaguar category.

You should always take the upgrades. They are fixes to known issues.

All Diesel engines are slow to start as they need pressure and heat which happens after a few revolutions of the engine.

Rough Idle is normally because the Throttle Body and MAF need cleaning.

2014 F350 diesel 6.7 92,000 mi. Check engine light, suddenly runs very rough when idling and loud engine knocking. Any idea of the cause?

loud knocking can be the timing has gone out so don't drive or start engine till its checked. https://roadmasterengineworld.com/2018/03/timing-gear-caution-on-2011-2016-ford-6-7l-diesel-engines/
loud tapping can be the pistons hitting the valves. engine light could be on because the knock sensor is activated. this will put engine in low rev limp mode to try and limit damage, either way it need looking at to find the fault. other cause can be oil pressure/flow is not correct. or the valves are in need of adjustment. can also be the engine has become out of balance.

Keeps stalling while driving. idling real crazy when I first start it.

I would suggest looking for a vacuum leak. Listed for a loud sucking sound with the engine idling. Or use some carburetor cleaner and spray around the engine with it running and listed for the idle RPM to change.

Growling engine noise only at idle. Cam area

Take all of the belts off for a short run at idle. If the sound goes away it is pulley related, spin each pulley and listen for bearing noise, also check for play at this time.

If the noise does not go away when the motor is driving no accessories you have a more serious problem.

Diesel engine

It sounds like the plugs are bad or not heating correctly. Running it out of petrol can mess them up like that sometimes.

Hard to start, 2.8 TD Pajero 1996

warm up the engine and turn it off then try to turn the crankshaft pulley with a suitable wrench. if its too hard to turn by hand then the bearings might be too tight.
