4wd switches blinking and wont engage

I have a 1996 Chevrolet truck and my 4wd swiches just blink when i push the 4hi or 4lo. i did what some people said and changed the actuator switch on the differential and changed the transfer case motor(encoder) and i still have nothing. i checked to see if i had power going to the transfer case motor before i changed it and it did have power going to it so i thought this would work. you can here it clanking in and out of 4lo and 4hi but it doesn't engage when i try it on a hill. Could it be in the 4wd switch on the dash? Please Help this is frustrating. nathan

is this why the part is easy to take out? LOL. so this switch will actually help engage the 4wd? cause i can hear it switch back and forth but it wont engage.

I have the same problem with one addition - when I try to engage the 4X4 the ABS light comes on also. Sometimes when the engine starts and the ABS light goes off as normal the 4X4 will engage. What was the final solution.

If no 4x4 in any range hi or low but you hear tranfer engage if could be the actuator on front axle or inside differential both axles are locked together with a sliding gear on the one axle that actuator pushes on to second axle ,when engaged the sliding gear is actually on both axles to lock front end what happens is they come out of alignment due to a bad roller bearing that keeps the axles lined up ..hope this helps

I have the same problem you do. the noise you are hearing is the transfercase engaging. that is not the problem. the diff is not engaging.that is what the actuator does it locks in the front diff. there is also a fuse that powers the front axle it is number 24 it could be blown. your lights blink even with that fuse blown. for some reason the actuator is not working. i replaced my actuator and it worked for about 2 weeks. now its back to doing it again. alot of people have this problem and says its not the actuator. there is also a actuator switch on diff located above the actuator its self.

THE TRANSFER CASE MOTOR IS ONLY FOR 4WD LOW. That would have never been the problem as soon as you confirmed it shifted into 4wd Low. 2wd and 4 Hi work off of vacuum. You may have one or two issues. A vacuum leak up by the front axle that engages the 4wd HI or the sensors on the transfer case.

check the solenoid on the front differential. i had a similar problem. when i would start to engage 4wd low/high and it would blow the fuse. i replaced the front solenoid and fixed my problem.

the solenoid can be found in the right side of the front differential. costs about $100 at local part store and takes 5-10 to changeout with an adjustable wrench.

Chevrolet truck 4wd switch blinks

If they are blinking I believe it means that there are fault codes present in the pcm. You need to get the computer scaned to see if there are an codes present. If you live near an Autozone or Checker autoparts they can scan it for free.

My 98 chevy blazer won't shift into 4wd.

Most common problem is the vacuum diaphragm that is so inconviently mounted UNDER the battery tray. The cable that locks in the front diff is attached to it and vacuum pulls it in/out.
