Indicator / reverse wiring for 76 F100 - Cars & Trucks

red wire with lite green tracer, four cylinder engine.
It appears to go hot with key on. There is ignition fuse in underhood fuse box.

Does the starter stay engaged? If so it will be your starter relay. I've got a 76 f100 with a 390 n it it was doing the same thing

1=yellow wire left hand indicator 2=blue wire reverse lights 3= white wire earth to ground 4= green wire right hand indicator 5=brown wire side light 6= red wire stop lights 7 =black wire side lights

Ford Neutral Safety Switch; Ford Reverse Light Switch; Backup Light Switch.

The Neutral Safety Switch wires in my 1971 Ford F100 are orange with a blue stripe.
The Reverse, or Backup Light Switch wires are black with a red stripe.

There are two sets of two wires across this combined neutral safety and backup light switch, for a total of 4 wires. Photos are at the end of this post.

The neutral switch also controls the backup lights, and is the same 1967/77.

There is no separate backup light switch..except on 1967/68 F350's.

Neutral switch location 1967/77:

The plastic half moon shaped neutral safety switch mounts on the outside lower portion of the steering column (NOT on the transmission!).

It's activated by an inverted Y shaped lever that snaps on the shift tube

The front, steering wheel side of the neutral / reverse switch after removal from the steering column. The switch's two functions are actuated when the lever in the column moves the switch lever shown here to different positions as gears are selected.


The neutral switch is installed on the steering column near the firewall, with 5/8" bolts into the steering column (visible hole) and down column from a rectangular opening in the column housing. The actuating lever for the switch is attached to the gear shift shaft inside the housing; the lever is visibly protruding from the opening in this image.

Copy the passenger side wires they should be the same color except the blinker.

I need a wireing diagram for f100 truck

there is a little cord that goes from the column to the indicator. they get old and tear. we have used dental floss and super glue to replace them on our 76 blazer and our 84 jimmy

Parts store and get a Haynse Manual they have a petty good wirering diagram.

might even just be the wire from the reverse indicator switch.
Don't know anything about mitsubishi's , but lots of cars have the reverse gear indicator switch threaded right into the side of the transmission

wires are pinched and shorting together near the left (drivers side) trunk hinge. brake light power is feeding back through the reverse light wiring. this will also turn on the check engine light with a neutral safety switch malfunction code as the computer also sees this voltage in the reverse light circuit. Find and repair the wiring, pull the EFI fuse in the panel under the hood to clear the code. Hope this helps
