Hi! The MAF (mass air flow) sensor is surely faulty. The MAF has big contribution on the engine performance specially on the idling an vacuum supply. If the MAF is faulty the rpm will drop eratically or die. Regarding the overheating problem, you may want to check the radiator blower for it may be tripping that sometimes it works and sometimes won't. This can be a good cause. It is threaded. I use an air powered saw to remove these. It is a common problem. You can do it with a hacksaw blade. Stick the blade in and cut outward into 3 or 4 pieces. Just cut till you hit the threads. Then pry the sections out one at a time. The new one will be metal. Or you can use a large easy-out.
It sounds like when you hit your brakes your brake booster is using alot of vacuum so if you can turn the idle up a little bit that should help.I would raise your rpm's up say it idles at 700 rpm's now I would change it to about 900 rpm's. also make sure your vacuum line from the brake booster to the engine is sealed off good and has no holes in it.
Assumed your AC unit is OK, but uneven temperature distribution. Try to throw the heater on an off severtime. A sticky valve on the heater would cause similar problem.
Observe the RPM while parking your car. While the AC cut in cut out (or turn on an off). If it cause no load on the engine. The freon may be low or the compressor is bad. In this case only the intake side of the evaporator is cooler than the other side.
