It should clear the computer in like 5 seconds, but if the codes havent been serviced or parts replaced the CEL will come back on eventually. Usually within 10 mins

SOURCE: 2002 Silverado code PO174

After fighting with mine (2003 GMC 5.3 liter), I believe I have it solved. Mine was throwing P0171 and P0174. Also, there was an occasional p0101. I had a rough idle sometimes right when I started it, but usually after 5 minutes when the fuel system went in to closed loop mode (about 200 RPM swings at idle that slowly went away). Days below 10 degrees were much worse.

I cleaned the MAF sensor, checked fuel pressue, changed spark plugs, and cleaned the throttle body. The code basically means that more fuel is being dumped in by opening the fuel injectors longer. The code is set by the long term trim on the injectors be over 23% (opened 23% longer than they should be based on sensor readings). The extra fuel allows the engine to run with the right air to fuel ratio (not necessarily lean as the code suggests). Causes could be low fuel pressure (from pump, fuel regulator, clogged injectors, and such). Running a scanner on it for several days, everything looked normal.

That is all background. The other cause is that air is being introduced into the intake after the MAF sensor. Extra fuel has to be added for the air that the MAF does not see. I did some digging and found out that the gaskets between the plastic intake manifold and cylinder heads are prone to leaking. I tried to spray throttle body injector around where it might leak to monitor the engine speed, but the air leak seems to be less on warmer days and leaks can occur on the inside edge of the gasket where it is hard to reach with the spray (there are foam ends that open the inside edges to atmosphere). I replaced the gaskets and my long term trim dropped to about 6% from 10% on warmer days to pegged out at 25% on cold days with a cold engine. The work isn't too bad as long as you are patient enough to get the plugs off of the ignitors. I have yet to test it out in cold weather, but I am pretty confident.

you might try unhooking the battiey for 20min both + and - posties cuz that will force the computor to have to resest only if you have addressied the fuel pressure problem which taht would most likly be your filter which isn't all that much

On my 2002 Chev Sil Z71 I have OBDII ..Can I use the paperclip to A and B in Diagnostics to locate code in memory that is giving me the service engine soon light on dash ?

NO! there is no way of retrieving the trouble codes by means of the check engine light. but if you go to auto zone they will pull the codes for free.

How to reset the engine servce lisht.

The light has to be reset using a scan tool or code reader. What you are actually doing to turn off the "check engine" or "service engine soon" lamp is clearing the service codes. Disconnecting the battery cable won't clear the codes on most vehicles built after 1994. You should note what the service code[s] are that caused the computer to turn the light on and have those problems repaired othewise the light will come on again after a few drive cycles once the computer sees that the same problems are still there.

Service Soon light is on.. what does that mean?

In most cases the light will go out by itself once the problem is resolved that made the light illuminate. You can RESET the light by removing and re-installing the fuse(s) marked as ECM in the fuse panel or by disconnecting the battery for several seconds.

If the light continues to illuminate, You will need to extract the computer codes from the computer via the factory specifications to see what code(s) are being stored in the computer.

NOTE: Disconnecting the battery will cause the engine to run a little erratic until you drive it for several miles so the computer can re-learn it's proper settings.

How to Reset Service Light
Chevrolet Suburban 2000-01
GMC Yukon XL, Chevrolet Silverado,GMC Trucks Sierra 1999-00
Turn the ignition key to the RUN position. Fully push and release the accelerator pedal 3 times within 5 seconds. If the CHANGE OIL SOON light flashes 2 times, the system is reset. However, if the light comes on and stays on for 5 seconds, the system did not reset. Repeat the procedure if the system does not reset.

Let us know (remember rated this help). Good luck.

I think someone loosened my gas cap on my 07 silverado, would like to know if there is a way to reset engine light.

Once you tighten the gas cap the engine light will reset itself after it has gone threw the necessary drive cycles, but only if the problem has been fixed. So yes if the check engine light came on for the reason of a loose gas cap, once you tighten it it will go off on its own.

ENGINE LIGHT ON ATFER HAVING IT SERVICE & THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE LIGHT

There are well over 100 problems in the electronics that turn the service engine soon light on, go to autozone or a kragen and they will run the trouble code test for free, then record that code and post it here. As far as the 4X4 goes that problem is most likely the electric motor that engages the 4X4 tranfer case, u will have to have that tested by either a 4X4 shop or the dealer, the dealer is the best option.

Service engine soon light is on and when hooked up to the computer at auto zone it mentioned a knock sensor issue. Is this common? Also is this something easily changed? It is a 2002 Z71 with about...

The knock sensor is easily replaced. If you look below the passenger side exhaust manifold, you should see it sticking out of the side of the engine block. it'll have an electrical connector, that once unplugged, will allow you to unscrew the sensor from the engine block. I hope this helps.
