If you can shift gears than you have a manual transmission. If you shift into any gear and the transmission acts as if it is in neutral. More than likely the car needs a new clutch. If there is anything else please write back.
Testimonial: "Hi Larry, Many thanks for that response. The car is an automatic transmission vehicle. I can move it from park to neutral and to drive but the car won't move. Then I discovered that the transmission oil dried up. I have refilled the fluid, yet, it won't move."

Ratio codes generally indicate a pressure loss & slipping which the computer reads as a gear ratio problem. Likely you need a rebuild.

First off check all of the obvious things. The most important is the transfer case shifter, make sure your transfer case is not in neutral. Seems obvious but it is easy to overlook. Next check the fluid in your clutch resivior or if it is an automatic check the transmission fluid. After that there are only three things it could be with a manual transmission. The Clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder, or the clutch itself. All of these can be checked by a qualified mechanic. With an automatic transmission it could be a multitude of different problems internal to the transmission. The only other thing I would check on an automatic is the shifter linkage to be sure the tranny is actually going into drive. After checking the shifter linkage I would take it to a qualified mechanic.

If I understand you correctly, you have ALL forward gears working, but reverse doesn't?... then the problem is in the transmission itself or the linkage on the trans linkage into reverse.

Get the clutch slave cylinder and master cylinder looked at.One of the 2 has failed. If the pedal goes to the floor or is very loose, this is very likely the cause. Not an expensive fix.Hope this helps
