You probably mean it won't move check your transmission fluid levels as ridiculous it sounds the smallest amount of transmission fluid that you're lacking makes all the difference in the world making your car move
No info generic answer check trans fluid level and gear selector cable or linkage
It would be good to have the car details - however I presume presume it has an automatic transmission.
As the engine revs it sounds like an Auto trans problem.
If it’s drivable take it to an Auto Trans Specialist or get them to come and inspect it.
Vehicle information needed
Year, make, model, engine size, please, and any warning lights on?, if you mean that in gear you can only go 5-10mph this must be an engine that has a throttle body motor and there should be a check engine light on and a wrench sign on the dash it's possible that the throttle body motor has failed get the codes read for precise info on the cause ,I'm assuming that you checked your transmission fluid and the level is good on flat ground and the fluid color is rose pink to red not burnt and brown and when pressing the gas pedal the trans is not slipping

is it a manual or automatic?if it's manual check clutch.if it is automatic check transmission fluid.
SOURCE: engine revs but car doesn't accelerate
Since you did not say what type of transmission you have i will suspect the clutch is slipping if it's a manual.
If it's an automatic, it could be several things. Low fluid level...clogged filter, fluid needs to be changed..transmission serviced...weak pump, bands/clutch packs worn...etc
Good luck..i hope this helps, please rate me a fixya.

Third is either striped out on the shaft or the shift arm is worn out. Either way it must come out. With that type of car, you don't want to take it to an amature who says "I always wanted to work on a transamision"
Hope you can find someone who knows what they are doing. Transmission experts are becoming rare.

It is possible the crossed jumper cables may have damaged the ECM (engine control module).
You can try disconnecting the negative battery cable for 5 minutes and reconnecting. Start the car and drive over 45mph for 3 miles, and see if the performance improves.
If the car still does not perform properly, have the car scanned for trouble codes. Take the vehicle to your local Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts and ask them to scan the car for codes, they will do it for you at no charge. Write the codes down and respond back.
Good luck, let me know.

It would appear that your CV joints are worn out completely, and you are going to have to replace them, or the whole half-shaft. When you hear those funny noises, that is your car talking to you... the only way it can, and you have to fix those noises ASAP.
