What do you mean , tries to start ? When you turn the key to start what happens ? Starter clicks , starter spins the engine around . Doesn't start an run . ,what ? Now it just so happens that your vehicle does not have a relay switch . Does the car have automatic trans . or manual ? Power from the ignition switch goes through the park neutral position switch to the starter solenoid S terminal for auto trans , An through the clutch pedal position switch for a manual trans .
Your best bet , have a qualified repair shop check it out .

It doesn't start and run. So what else could it be then if it doesn't have a relay switch
Jeff Armer please reply to my question
When you turn the key to start what happens ? Nothing or do you hear the starter solenoid click ?
Could be the ignition switch or park neutral safety switch or bad Positive battery cable going to the starter or a bad ground . Testing the electrical circuit using a DVOM - digital volt ohmmeter looking at a wiring diagram so you know what wires to test is the proper way to dignose the problem .
A way to check to see if the ignition switch , park neutral safety switch are good is to use a test light ,volt meter an see if you have voltage at the S terminal on the starter solenoid - small wire . If someone turns the key to start an you have a voltmeter on the S terminal an it shows 12.6 (battery voltage ) those thing's are good . Watch the video on voltage drop testing for bad cables .
She replaced the starter ,it would come with a new solenoid. She was looking for the one inch by one inch square little plastic box inside the fuse box . The engine does not turn over when turning the key to start .

The solenoid is the starter relay (solenoid starter relay ).
If there is loose electric connections on the main wires between battery and starter and engine ground to battery ground, the starter motor will starve for power while the loose connections consume power while energized or trying to start, and power loss reflects as heat, even smoking hot, and can even burn out starter motor internal winnings. So, electric connections must be clean and tight.
Another thought is timing. Crank shaft to camshaft Timing Belt condition should be checked for stretching, slippage, accuracy. Must be well orchestrated in timing.
Finally, the torque converted solenoid but not likely. TCS operates a valve, the valve locks the converter from slipping, valve sometimes sticks locked but would reflect as defective when driving and coming to a stop, where the motor would shut off, like not pressing a clutch pedal before stopping while in gear. Not applicable in park or neutral.

If you read her post , she replace starter an solenoid .
I need location of starter relay switch on my 95 chevy corsica. Put new starter/solenoid and new battery with 750 cranking amps and it tries to start but wont
An i posted a video on voltage drop testing starter circuit , do you know what that is ?
And another thing , a 95 chevy corsica doesn't have a timing belt .
Good observation Jeff. Starter solenoid relays aren't relays? timing chains don't stretch nor have plastic teeth to cause slippage? tries to start to me seems like compression may be working against the starter motor. A better description would be better for better answers, some description is between the lines. We on the same team here. I know very well what electricity is and how it behaves, by ocupation, retired now.
Melissa may not perform repairs herself but can load up with ammo to talk to a repairman.

Also che k neutral safety switch because it also will create same scenario!j

The neutral safety switch is located in the shifter housing.
Here is a link to a good article on this topic, that would beat an explanation from me.

Yes, it sounds like the NSS is the culprit.

the starter should be replaced. The solenoid is kikcing the pinion out but there is no contact being made to turn the starter motor. I have the exact same truck and before i changed the starter used the old starter tap trick. Tap the starter casing with a hammer and it should start turning again. hope this was helpful for you. Good luck.
SOURCE: car engine will not crank
on the starter there is a big battery cable and a small signal. wire connect a test light to the signal wire and try to crank the engine. if the light comes on then you will need a starter. be sure you have good connections first good luck.bye the way the light should only be on when you hold the key in crank pos.if the light is on all the time you are on the wrong wire.
SOURCE: wont start, new battery, relay good, starter good.
Check the Starter Solenoid mounted near the battery.Check it out in the dark...have someone try to start it and see if it sparks at the solenoid.connections may be loose. Also check/wiggle wiring harness to starter.

try lookin at the wiring harness under the battery tray, seen them corrode there alot
