There is a tool that presses the spring down to allow for the replacement of the clip. It is also used in the removal of the same spring and clip. This is if you are refering to the spring and clip that go on last, after your turn signal switch. If you are referring to the spring that goes around the spline, I would recommend finding a deep well socket of similar diameter than the spring, but big enough to allow the spline entry and use it to depress the spring fully bfore placing the clip

Either the pin that connects rod to tranny is broken off, or there is internal transmission problems.

it should be.....that happens in alot of ford trucks and the broncos the cable gets stretched from a long time in service.

Shifter cable? No. It pops on a nipple under dash. Lay on your back looking up under the dash while moving shifter. Do you see the end moving?
