Take out the #1 spark plug and turn the engine by hand until you feel compression building when your thumb is over the spark plug hole. Now continue turning the engine slowly while watching for the timing mark on the dynamic balancer line up with the TDC mark on the timing indicator. Position the distributor so that the rotor is pointing to the #1 plug wire position on the rotor cap. When you mesh it with the cam gear, it will move past the #1 position. Take it back out and move the rotor to compensate for the distance it moves when the distributor is fully seated. Install the base clamp and bolt but don't tighten the bolt yet. Make the engine ready to run. Hook up a timing light and start the engine and set the timing by rotating the distributor until the timing marks are correct, then tighten the clamp bolt.

How to replace o'ring on distributor dummy port on a 3.4 ltr engine dual cams

unbolt the hold down bolt and remove it and the flange. get the distributor plug loose and pull it up and check to see if the o`ring is in one piece. if so run some automotive silicone around the seal and add a distributor paper gasket to it and drop it back in and bolt up. other wise they want you to remove the head to pull the shaft out. there are ways to do it without going to the extreme but this is the quickest way.

If you have installed the dizzy in correctly ie lined it up for TDC you would use a strobe light on the bottom of the engine timing marks, while turning the dizzy to set it up,if no strobe light and it is installed correctly set the dizzy in the centre leave the bolt slightly loose so you can turn the dizzy, start it up and keep turning it fractionally until it sounds like it's running about right.......

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the primary lead from the terminal post at the side of the distributor.

The wire connector will contain a special conductive grease. Do not remove it. The same grease will also be found on the metal parts of the rotor.
  1. Disconnect the vacuum line if there is one.
  2. Remove the two distributor cap retaining hooks or screws and remove the distributor cap.
  3. Note the position of the rotor in relation to the base. Scribe a mark on the base of the distributor and on the engine block to facilitate reinstallation. Align the marks with the direction the metal tip of the rotor is pointing.
  4. Remove the bolt that holds the distributor to the engine.
  5. Lift the distributor assembly from the engine.

To install, if engine was not disturbed:
  1. Insert the distributor shaft and assembly into the engine. Line up the mark on the distributor and the one on the engine with the metal tip of the rotor. Make sure that the vacuum advance diaphragm is pointed in the same direction as it was pointed originally. This will be done automatically if the marks on the engine and the distributor are line up with the rotor.
  2. Install the distributor hold-down bolt and clamp. Leave the screw loose enough so that you can move the distributor with heavy hand pressure.
  3. Connect the primary wire to the distributor side of the coil. Install the distributor cap on the distributor housing. Secure the distributor cap with the spring clips or the screw type retainers, whichever is used.
  4. Install the spark plug wires. Make sure that the wires are pressed all of the way into the top of the distributor cap and firmly onto the spark plugs.

If the engine was turned while the distributor was removed, or if the marks were not drawn, it will be necessary to initially time the engine. Follow the procedure below.
To install, if engine was disturbed:
  1. Rotate the engine until the No.1 piston is at TDC compression.
  2. Using a flat bladed screwdriver, in the distributor hole, rotate the oil pump gear so that the slot in the oil pump shaft is slightly past the 3:00 o'clock position, relative to the length of the engine block.
  3. With the distributor cap removed, install the distributor with the rotor at the 5:00 o'clock position, relative to the oil pump gear shaft slot. When the distributor is completely in place, the rotor should be at the 6:00 o'clock position. If not, remove the distributor and perform the entire procedure again.
  4. Tighten the lockbolt.

1987 ford bronco 2 turns over wont ignite loose distributor

If your distributor is lose than you need to check the timing. Pull a plug out and put the plug wire back on it. ground the side of the plug and see if you get any spark. It should be a bright blue. If there is spark than put the plug back in. But I would first check the timing.
