Fluid level. Replace trans filter and fluid. No luck? May have to rebuild unit. To prevent this from happening, change trans fluid every 24K miles or so.
It sounds to me like your gearbox is knackered, but just to be sure get underneath & check all the linkages, get yourself a workshop manual as linkages are easy to fit even for a novice, solenoids are relatively inexpensive so if you don't feel like doing this yourself then try this route first.
I have a '96 tahoe. Look for a code on the battery to see when it was installed. L09 would be december 09. if it is less than 3 years old have it charged and then try.
