Hey Karen,

That lift gate has a control module that controls the operation.
It communicates with the latch and other body modules

If the info display is indicating it is open when you know it is indeed shut.....I would suspect the latch assembly. There is a micro switch in the latch that informs the module when the gate is closed.
A scanner is actually the best most efficient way to diagnose this issue. A good independent garage should be able to scan for you for a fee. It will be worth the fee. Also...the lift assist struts are problematic on this particular vehicle. They assist in opening and keeping the lift-gate open.

Chevy equinox 2016 lift gate. New button and New latch, works about 5 percent of the time at best. Has steady voltage going to the latch but still only releases every 30 pushes even when bypassed.

In link below of owners manual starting page 223 fuse box diagram I see two fuses for lift gate, one for module and the other is for logic.

On video below it talk about adjustment of latch. If not opening right move latch around and attempt to open liftgate..
You might try closing latch with door open and push button to see latch open up. If it opens fine it could be binding when door is actually closed and latch needs adjusting.

I have a 17 Terrain which does not have power lift gate. Something I notice in the video was if you have power lift gates it says to step back when opening and closing because there are sensors to prevent someone from being hit with the door.

Rear hatch keeps opens while driving...

Unless you have electrical diagnostic skills , I suggest you take this to the dealer ! The lift gate can be opened by operating the switch on the instrument panel. Battery voltage is supplied to the liftgate actuator through the body control module (BCM). The BCM will pulse the lift gate actuator when a release input is received through the key fob, or the instrument panel switch.
The body control module (BCM) receives an input from the liftgate ajar assembly. The ajar assembly is normally open when the liftgate is fully closed. When the liftgate is opened, the ajar assembly contacts close providing a path to ground. The driver information center (DIC) illuminates the rear access open message when the gate is open. The instrument panel cluster (IPC) receives a serial data message from the BCM indicating the liftgate ajar status. If this message is displayed and the vehicle speed is greater than 8 km/h (5 mph), a chime will sound.
It could be ajar switch is bad .

2007 chevy equinox ls awd rear lift gate wont open

I don't quite understand. The gate won't open with the power button or you physically cannot open the gate by pushing the latch? If you can't open it from the power button then you'll have to start checking your fuses. Your owners manual that comes with the car has all the fuse locations in it. If it's not the fuse then you either have a bad wire or the motor to pop it open has gone bad. If you cannot open it manually by the latch, then I'd say your linkage inside the door is broken and you'd be better off taking it to the dealer or to a body shop to get it repaired, especially if you're not mechanically inclined.
