Hi Alan Pearson, does not sound good. Worn valves maybe or cracked block. Suggest getting mechanic to assess and quote as engine repair as it may cost more than engine is worth to fix ?
I had this on a car that was LPG but it was a grey oil smoke and same sort of thing loss of power and then heaps of smoke.
Suggest as a simple test - putting a piece of paper in front of exhaust pipe while running engine after it has cooled down and is cold and see if any oil is being sprayed out.
Black smoke means you have too much diesel in the mix that is being ignited. This can be because either too little air is getting in or too much fuel is going in. First step (easy and cheap) is replace the air filter. If there's still smoke check the erg valve is clean and moves easy. If it's still there after that then check the common rail injectors for leakage.
The black smoke is blow-by you need a ring job. Oil is getting by the top ring of your pistons in one or more cylinders. Loss of power under a load is also indicative of this.
Suspect cracked injector(s). I drove a truck with cracked injector and it billowed black smoke. Power loss can be anything from a sensor to a clogged filter. try changing the fuel filter.
