2003 ford ranger 3.0 flex fuel is getting a p0340 and p1336 code

Did you reset the code after the replacement?

Camshaft / Crankshaft Sensor is the reason for the code. They come in different qualities. OEM is best, made in Mexico is the worst!

Ford has a TON of technical service bullpens for this code but mostly on F-150s. Call your local dealer and ask for the service manager. If he is an honest fellow, he may let you in on a secret recall. Otherwise, The code is for crankshaft position/camshaft position input signal error.

How do I change the 2003 Ford Ranger XLT 3.0 L Flex Fuel -Auto Trans 2wd Camshaft synchronizer and sensor . Do I need any special tools ? Are there after market parts that are precise replacements for the OEM parts ?

Depending on how much gas was in the tank and how steep the hill was, the fuel pump most likely started pumping air instead of gas, thereby stalling the engine.

I would think it would be just the Camshaft Position Sensor.I looked up the codes and they say pretty much the samething.

P1336 Ford Crankshaft/Camshaft Sensor Range/Performance

The Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor detects the position of the camshaft in order to identifiy when piston No. 1 is on its compression stroke. The CMP sensor is used for ignition timing in the Ford DIS igntion system, but not in the EDIS igntion system. Both DIS/EDIS use the CMP signal for synchronizing the firing of sequential fuel injectors.

On the 3.0L vulcan engine, the CMP signal is generated by a single Hall-Effect magnetic switch, activated by a single "vane" spinning around by virture of a synchronized shaft which is driven by the camshaft. 

The CMP sensor & synchronizer/shaft are located behind the intake manifold (i.e., back near the firewall on a Ranger) on the top of the cylinder block. If you just need to replace the sensor, it is a simple job of unplugging the electrical connector and removing the screws holding the sensor in place. Here is a sketch of the sensor to give you an idea what to look for:

the fault is in the black box that is on the bottom of the fuel pump. his controls a solenoid which shuts off the fuel pump when hot and it sticks. You have to remove the pump and do the bypass on the electronics, easy to bypass but a days work to get the pump out to do the mod.
