Stuck in neutral

My 2008 Audi Q7's gear shift is stuck in Neutral and I can turn the car on and off but even when I turn it off I cannot get the key out of the ignition. Or get the gear shift to move out of Neutral.

SOURCE: gear shift stuck in neutral when moving to park

1st check your shifter linkage-does the indication coincide with your gear recognition display in instrument cluster? most liley if it is not the linkage the gear recognition swith inside your shift box is defective-usually they get soda or coffee spelled on them and malfution. I would recomend having you car scanned for codes.

SOURCE: car will not shift into gear

Sounds like a linkage/cable to me. Disconnect the linkage at the transmission and move the shift actuator by hand to see if there is the same things happening. Don't try to do this with the engine running unless someone is holding the brake inside the car.

I assume you've checked all connections from the battery and starter to make sure they are clean and tight. It is a little weird that you do not have trouble starting in neutral yet you get a clicking sound in park. My first thought would be the neutral safety switch on the transmission but you shouldn't even get a click in park if that is bad.

One possibility is the contacts in your starter have worn down and are causing too more resistance (explains the clicking). At the back of your starter is a metal cover that is held on by three tiny bolts (6mm). Disconnect the battery first! (You might have to remove the starter to get to this part) Remove this cover and pull out the plunger assembly. Underneath are two brass plates. Compare one plate to the other. If one is noticeably thinner then it could be the cause of the clicking. You will even see a round groove in the plate. You can buy the plunger and contacts from this website: http://www.nationsautoelectric.com/densoparts.html or you can opt to get a starter from your friendly auto parts store. The first picture shows the bad contact on the left. Notice the groove, the metal has become really thin there. 1e874da.jpgThis picture shows a pitted plunger assembly. Always good to replace it too.cd09a24.jpgThis picture shows all the new parts installed.207ff4f.jpg

First call a dealer and see if this is a warranty item, if not ask if it is a common problem and how much to fix it. I woul dlet a dealer deal with this as it sounds like a manufacturer defect.

There is a clip the holds the clutch cable to the shift. Sounds like it broke. There was a recall awhile back to replace the plastic clip with a metal one.

First thing to do is check and see if the brake lights work, the brake lights power the release solenoid so you can move the gear selector from part to the desired gear.

My Audi 2003 A6 is stuck in neutral starts but don't move.

Is it a manual transmission or an automatic? If it's a manual (clutch pedal), then you've got a problem for the shop. If an automatic, it should shift into a forward gear or reverse whenever you depress the brake.

My Audi A6 is stuck in neutral and will not budge I can start the car and everything works it just will not come out of neutral

When you say it is stuck in neutral what is stuck? is the shiftter stuck in the neutral postion or is the car not moving when shifter is placed in drive or other gears,
if the car doesnt move in gear i would say it is transmission releated, this may be a bad tranny or fluid is very low.

check your transmission oil, make sure it is full. this is were i would start,

Will not shift properly

Tranny could be bad or the switch that indicates position not only to the start circuit and the backup lights. and allows the car to be started in neutral. whis swich can bind and may need replaced as it when removed should turn with little or no resistance
