Check the linkage between the lock cylinder and the lock; when the latch was loose, the linkage may have broken or otherwise disconnected. The lock/unlock rod to the latch will be accessible inside the door for manual operation rather than using the lock cylinder or interior lock in the door panel. If this is the rear door on the driver side, additionally check the position of the child safety lock; when this is in the ON position, the inside door handle function is disabled. I have a 2002 pontiac grand am with both power windows and door locks. Everything else works except the lock assembly on the rear driver side rear door latch. I have removed the inside panel , aboth rods are connected. all power is disconnected to that door. I moved both of the rods correctly and the door will slightly open but that is all. How can I get it to release so I can repair or replace the latch and lock if nescessary ? I had the same problem only reversed with the frond door it would not close but after some trying I fixed that problem.

There are long linkage rods from the inside handle to the latch assembly. There should be an adjustment on these links. Too tight keeps latch from locking, too loose it won't unlatch. Use a screw driver or rod to trip the latch asm so you don't have to keep opening and closing the door. Also if it sticks closed and won't unlatch, the door won't be locked closed on you.

most of the time when this happens you have something wrong with the door latch instide the door... the peice the hooks the post .
you will need to go inside the car with a thin rod bend the end into a sharp S shape try to get ahold of the green plastic clip and push or pull depending on the latch type... once you get the door open you will have to replace the latch unless the rods on the inside have just come loose, or most of the time the lock part to the latch is broken and you will have to get ahold of the lock part with your rod you made to get it to unlock... hope this helps you a bit.
