Standing at the front of the car pull the cover off the left side of the motor and check the belt. No tools are required the check the belt. Cover pulls up and off. It's to the left end of the valve cover.

do as bearslayr said... if the belt is intact you likely have another problem... BUT if the belt is broken or slipped there is definitely major damage to the head/valves and maybe the pistons! Good luck.
P.S. this is why you should always change the timing belt at the recommended intervals!!!

02 Jetta 2.0 Check Engine Light

Hi, only way to really know what the check engine light is for is to run a diagnostic check on the pcm using a OBD II diagnostics tool, you can buy one at most auto parts store's or if you don't want to spend the money on one some auto parts store's will do a diagnostics check on your vehicle for free, good luck.

Either you threw a belt or the alternator went bad. Your symptoms sound like alternator...you were running on the battery till you ran out of power.

Sputtering

If your car didnt overheat when it was almost out of oil, you are lucky. If it did over heat those pistons and your cylinder might have been damaged. Always check your oil or you will be walking soon. Sounds like the fuel filter could be clogged too or the fuel line. Check your oil at least every 3 or 4th time you put gas in your car.
