4 Wheel drive will not engage on Chevy S10 Pickup

I have a 1994 S10 Pickup, 4.3L Vortec engine.

When I start the truck, all 3 lights on the 4 wheel drive switch will illuminate as expected, and then the 2 wheel light will stay on.

If I push the 4hi or 4lo it will not switch in. This is a new switch, so I know it is not a problem with the in dash switch.

I went under the vehicle, and reseated the connection on the vacuum switch on the motor housing. It then started shifting in and out of 4 wheel drive, and the motor sounds fine.

It then all of a sudden stopped working again about a day later, and will not switch in and out of 4 wheel drive.

Any idea on whether this could be the vacuum switch that screws into motor housing, or could it be the actual motor that is going bad?

Appreciate any help you can provide.

SOURCE: chevrolet truck 4wd switch blinks

If they are blinking I believe it means that there are fault codes present in the pcm. You need to get the computer scaned to see if there are an codes present. If you live near an Autozone or Checker autoparts they can scan it for free.

Sounds like the chain in the transfer case has broke or the linkage is out of adjustment

Problems with chevy s10

have the actuator (mounted on the drivers side transfer case) checked. that is what makes the selection from 2-4 hi-4 low. it takes the place of a gear shift. they are a fairly inexpensive and easy repair (if thats the problem). i would start there providing you have checked the fuses and relays. i hope this helps.

Chevy s10 4 wheel drive will not engage

There is a vaccuum operated switch located on the transfer case that sends vaccum to the accuator that pulls a cable that locks the front end in. Check for vac coming in and out of this switch if no vac out replace it. This switch is a very common problem. You can find them at most parts stores in the help section #49315. please rate.

1993 Chevy 1500 pickup 4-wheel drive

I replaced the malfunctioning “thermal actuator” with the “Warn” Vacuum actuator setup, it’s been working great for about 7 years now, simple install, if I remember correctly, it was about $150.
That’s what engages the front diff into 4wd.
