HOW TO REMOVE 12 VOLT OUTLET

The power plug for a Garmin Nuvi GPS came apart in the 12 volt outlet and the small battery dropped into one of the slots in that outlet. Outlet isn't working now and I want to pull the outlet to get the battery out. What do I need to do/NOT do??

Thanks,
Tim

Are you talking about the cigar lighter in the center black panel, or the power point to the right of the radio ?

The center one, you need to pull the trim panel off. Open the ask tray, and give it a yank in both lower corners ( one at a time ) it is hard to do the first time, but there are 6 ( 8? ) spring clips holding it on.
Once you have the trim panel off, the cigar lighter is held in place by a plastic ring from the back. You need to push in the pins to get it off the back ( after unplugging the socket connector ).

To get to the power point, you need to do the same with trim panel removal, and push from the back of it. There are pins holding it into the silver dash panel.

If the fuse for the cigar lighter or power point ( 2 different fuses ) is already dead, just used needle nose pilars to pull the parts out. had the same thing with my Nuvi plug the first time. It is the fuse and nose for the fuse that is left in there.

The outside ring screws out of the socket to remove it. I always just stick 2 of my fingers into the socket and twist it.

Add 12 volt outlet switched by ignition

Look in your owners manual for the accessory fuse. That line turns off. Also, consider a 12 volt relay between the seat and your power source. A small toggle switch will work well for a relay.

Car battery is dead. I have a Black and Decker Simple Start car battery recharger. I can figure out how to plug the outlet part into the wall but I do not know what to do about the part that goes onto...

You should have 2 wires with clips = one red that you clip on the Positive [ + ] post of the battery, this may be marked red on the cable. The other black clips to the Negitive [ - ] post of the battery.
Don't plug in the charger untill you clip the wires to the battery, make sure the charger is set to 12 volts. If your cherger has a cigar lighter wire just plug it in to the dash port.

Hi, i had a flat battery and took it off to charge it up,i came to put it back on but realized i had no key to get in the boot and obviously have no power and my car is now stranded on my drive going...

Go to any Automotive Parts Supplier (Advance Auto Parts) and tell them that you want a 9 volt battery backup that plugs into the cigarette lighter.......Or if you have a jump box,you with a 12 volt outlet plug on it,buy the cord that connects the outlet plug on jump box to the cigarette lighter outlet plug in the car.......Either option will give you the juice that you need.....I just hope that your boot is electronically operated

My cigarette lighter is not charging in my car what could it be?

You mean there seems to be no power to the vehicle's lighter unit outlet.

This lighter unit outlet is normally wired through its own fuse so check the fuse panel in the car for a blown fuse. If blown it must be replaced with a fuse of the correct amperage. The owner's manual will show you where the fuse is located.

Before you check the fuse just check the cigarette lighter outlet with another plug-in device if you have one such as a portable 12 volt tire compressor or a 12 volt plug-in auxiliary light. It could be that if you are using a charger from the outlet, the charger plug or wiring may be faulty rather than the car's power outlet itself. (These outlets don't usually give trouble unless the wiring has been messed with or the outlet itself has been damaged or abused).

If no device works from the lighter power outlet check the fuse as it may be blown.

1996 Cavalier 12 Volt power outlet in car doesn't work right?

Even thought the plug in is 12 volt. It's ouput is different. Most electronics have different ranges from 3-9 volts.
Does the 12 volt charger put out 12 volts? If so, it would burn up the electronics' capacitors on their power supplies.
How is the car's electronics doing? Are they too failing? If so, that would be a faulty voltage regulator, if not, I would hook up anything you use to the radio wires.
You cannot plug in anything directly to battery no matter what the person told you. Batteries charge, than release charge, a contiuous cycle. The power output is speratic and anything hooked straight up to the battery will need a fuse.
