May be a check valve letting warm expanded fuel to slowly leak back to the tank causing hard start. When starting cold its harder to move the cold thick fluid. Check into it. Good luck..

1989 GMC Sierra 1500 heater blows cold air. Changed thermostat. Both hoses are cold.

check antifreeze level add if low, and check intake heat control valve on ps side of intake if its locked shut it can be removed and a water pipe nipple put in place of it and the heater hose reconnected..if the water pump is good, it should give heat this valve should be on the intake with a heater hose connected to it..and its vacuum operated but will jam shut with age and cold weather..good luck..

DID YOU CHECK THE GRIDE HEATER OR SELENIODE
CUMMINS USE GRIDE HEATER (INTAKE HEATER) TO REPLACE GLOW PLUGS
SELENOIDE IS SPECIAL FOR THAT JOB MAY LOOK LIKE REGULAR BUT ITS NOT
CHECK WITH KEY ON EARLY IN AM TO SEE IF HEATER IS GETTING POWER
USED AT 12 VOLT TEST LIGHT AT HEATER INPUT MAKE SURE GROUND IS GOOD
IF NO POWER CHECK SELENOIDE TO SEE IF POWER IS THERE IF NO POWER
CHECK LIVE SIDE OF SELENIDE THEN CHECK SIGNAL SIDE (KEY ACTIVATED SMALL WIRE) IF NO SIGNAL POWER CHECK FUSE IF NO MAIN POWER BACK TRACK TO BATTERY

Po540 code

DTC P0540: Intake Air Heater - Incorrect Voltage

The Engine Control Module (ECM) uses an Intake Air Heater (IAH) to warm the incoming air for proper cylinder combustion. The ECM grounds the control coil of the IAH relay to energize the heater during cold weather operation. If the ECM detects voltage on the IAH circuit when the relay is commanded OFF, or incorrect voltage when the relay is commanded ON, this DTC will set.

There are several possible causes for this code including:

Faulty IAH Relay

Faulty IAH Relay Control Circuit

Faulty Line Voltage Reference Circuit

Faulty Heating Element

Faulty ECM

03 cummins hard start in cold weather, will start easy if pluged in,has code p0113

DTC P0113 is Intake Air / Charge Temperature Sensor High,
Check wiring to the sensor and if that is good then the sensor may be dirty or bad.

the link below shows what it looks like and has a price for the sensor.

Bought 01 dodge, 2yrs ago, has 300,000 miless,

Well, Hate to say this to you but your Cummins 24v turbo diesel does not have glow plugs. The fuel temperature necessary for proper ignition is heated by an element inside your fuel filter housing.
