My wife has said for a month that an unexpected shift would occur in car while driving highway speeds ( I noticed it happen once, it was kind of like shifting into overdrive). Tonight while I was driving on slippery steep street, I tried to back up but wheels slipped spun on the icy street and there was no reverse anymore. We got to the bottom of a hill in street light to look, because it sounded as if something was dragging, it wasn't! The tranny was making a whirring sound.
Christmas night, we needed to drive about 12 miles to get home. I noticed that tranny continued to slip and wasn't shifting out of first gear. So we took back roads home. Drive gear wasn't working yet shifting through the gears on the automatic worked a little better 1st, 2nd, 3rd gear (no Drive). Got it parked in my garage popped the hood, pulled the dipstick to smell tranny fluid, and it did not smell burnt. Any ideas, are there still bands that may slip, and just need adjusting?
Sir I would first change my filter. When you do you should be able to acertain if anything is wrong by what yuo find in your pan. I think your clutchs are probably bad, but with out being able to scan it I don't have any other ideas. I have been lucky a couple of time before and changing the filter solved my problem. Your car is in limp mode generally you have reverse and second gear. 1st gear and reverse use the same clutches, so I am wondering if maybe you have second gear only!

doesn't slip all the time there is no pattern when it happens. once you are at a constant speed tranny seems to work fine if you slow down it will kick out of gear.
