I would bet you have a bad cam/crank sensor it is mounted in the front lower end of the engine right above the crank. It is a common problem on the diesel. I have replaced mine three times in 175,000 miles. It is easy to do and fairly inexpensive. one bolt holds it in with a three pin weather tight connector. for my 97' 7.3 it is Ford P/N F7TZ-12K073-A. You can have someone with a good scan tool look for intermittant codes stored in the memory for the sensor.
Have you checked your glow plugs? There are a number of additives you can use. Go to Amsoil.com and try some cold start. I sell this stuff and alot of other things for diesels. I invested in a small code reader from my local auto parts store to help me diagnose my truck.
