2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo when lights are on left brake lamp/tail lamp goes out when you step on the brake. When lights are off it works fine. On the right side, the right tail light does not work but the brake light comes on when you apply the brakes. Replaced bulbs, sockets... what now?

SOURCE: the tail lights are out, so the brake lights-Jeep Grand Cherokee

The park, brake light sockets have a tendency to melt. I would try swapping the turnsignal socket with the brake light socket and see if it works. They just twist out.

SOURCE: 2002 jeep cherokee laredo

My 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee had the same problem. Over heated when standing still. Took it to dealer and they could not find any problem with cooling fan. After doing my own investigation I found out that the electric cooling fan would begin to seize up after about 1hr. of operating. (gets hot)

The dealer would look at fan and see that it was running and think its ok. The problem is, it wasn't running fast enough.

I have a relay on the right side of front fender and jumped the fan to stay on with motor off. (must know what your doing). After about 1hr. fan started slowing way down. Returned it to dealer told them what the problem was. They were not smart enough to jump the relay so they put a couple hundred miles on it even though i told them it works OK when moving. Make sure you tell dealer to use the relay to jump.
Replace cooling fan motor. Works great

SOURCE: I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo - One Brake Light

First, I want to say thank you for the info, you saved me money and aggravation. Second it took mea little while to figure out what contact I was looking for. So I would like to provide a little more detail to make it easier for others in the future.
This is the corrective method for your brake lights not working when your headlights are on(2000 Jeep Cherokee Larado).
1) The cause of the problem is heat from the bulb.
2) Remove the light assembly as if you were going to change a bulb.
3) Turn the socket and remove it from the taillight assembly and set it aside(check to be sure your bulb is not burnt out).
4) Look at the opening, you will see 3 flat chrome colored contacts on the assembly.
5) Notice the one by it self at the top of the opening, that is the "ground".
6) If you look closely you will notice the plastic around the ground contact has shrunk a little bit, this caused the contact to pull away from the socket, causing the problem.
7) With a small flat head screwdriver, VERY GENTLY pry up the contact so it stays slightly upward by itself.
8) Re-insert the bulb assembly back into the housing and press your brake petal with your lights on.
9) You should be in good to go!
10) Tools: Phillips head screwdriver and a small flat head screwdriver.
11) Time : 5 minutes per light

My 99 Jeep grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 has some brake light problems. The brake lights work fine during the day, but when I need to have my headlights on, my left brake light and tail light competley shut...

If you have any extra fuses, try replacing the ones for the head lights and tail lights. Make sure the fuses you replace are the same color as the ones you replace them with, that way the voltages are the same. Another issue is that a flasher could be going out.

How to fix my right brake light and fast moving turn signal on my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The most likely problem is two burned out light bulbs. A burned out tail/stop lamp on the right side and a burned out brake lamp on the left. If you have already replaced the bulbs, then yes, the circuit boards are the next most likely cause of the problem.

We have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo. We have changed bulbs, replaced a socket, and the drivers side tail light dosen't work. The brake light, turn signal, and back up lights do. Only the left tail...

Check the fuses as well as the wiring near the tail light.

If all seems good, get a cheap multimeter and check the voltage in the wires that go to the tail light (red probe on one wire and black probe on the other). If you get a reading about 12 Volts (or -12 depending on which wires the black and red are on) the problem is the tail light or bulb itself.

2001 Grand Cherokee Limited- Driver side rear brake light does not work if tail lights are on. When you step on brake tail light also goes out. With lights off everything works ok.

Very common issue is the lamp assembly (dealer item). They are very bad to ground back through the tail lamp filament, lights on the path has voltage on it and the lamp will not work.

94 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo: No power to left tail light

Traced the problem to the Lamp Outage Module located in the rear left quarter access panel behind the spare tire. Arcing had occurred on the left taillight line. Fortunately this part is readily available at your local Jeep recovery yard (none available in the U.S. from dealers). Recommend J& W Auto Wreckers in Antelope, CA (web site available). Massive number of Jeeps and fair prices. If you don't want to replace the LOM then you can join the two connectors that go into the LOM (LOM is optional) but you'll always show a lamp failure on your console.
