Power steering goes out

2005 Cobalt the power steering light comes on and you lose the power steering. You can still steer it's just alittle tougher. We were told by a mechanic it's the steering motor which will cost $900.00 to replace. Has there been a recall for this problem? I noticed there's alot more people with this problem. Thanks

I was driving my 2005 Cobalt yesterday and the same thing happened to me. The car dinged 3 times and then it said "power steering". It's costing me $885.00 to replace the steering column. With a $240 a month car payment and a $100 a month insurance payment and today's economy it's hard to come up with this much money. The car only has 40,000 miles on it! The radio locks up, the cd player doesn't want to take cds, my key gets stuck in the ignition. I've driven this car for only one year and already noticed all of these safety problems! The defrost will also fog up when I start the car so bad that you can't see for a few seconds.

My power steering just sarted doing this tonight I shut the car off take the key and its fine. drove for a bit and it did it again starting to get fed up with this car

i also have the same problems with my 2005 cobalt and even though i mentioned that problem with the car after only having the car for a month and ten days the power steering started to go out so i took it in and they so called replaced a internal steering shaft which was not what was wrong with the car and now five months later i can't even go 5 miles without the steering wheel locking up .and all the dealership can say money 1000 dollar was my quote when it could have been fix under the warranty when i told them what was happennig this is a shame that the car is made so poorly. something needs to be done. and soon i don't pay my car note to leave my car in the drive way every morning because it wont make the ride.

Yeah, I would have never bought this car had I know the issues I would be facing with the failed power steering.

i got in my car to go to work a few days ago and i got about 2 blocks from my house when my 2005 cobalt flashed "power steering". I lost it but somehow managed to do a U turn and get back to my house. On the way back to my house the "abs" light also came on. I took it for a drive the next day and had no problems with it. My mechanic said he has no clue what the problem could be...i just don't want to be driving 60 mph and lose the power steering again....

General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2005-2010 model year Chevrolet Cobalt vehicles;
2005 model year Pontiac Pursuit; 2005-2006 model year Pontiac G4; 2006 model year Pontiac G5 Pursuit; and 2007-2010 model year Pontiac G5
vehicles equipped with electric power steering. Some of these vehicles have a condition in which a sudden loss of power steering assist could occur at
any time while driving the vehicle. If the power steering assist is lost, a chime will sound and a "Power Steering" message will be displayed in the
Driver Information Center to inform the driver of the condition. Steering control will be maintained, as the vehicle defaults to a manual steering mode.
If power steering assist is lost, it may require greater driver effort at low vehicle speeds, for example, below 15 mph (25 km/h). Unless a driver
compensates for this additional effort, it may increase the risk of a crash.

I had the same problem and was told by the dealer that whenever that happens to just shut the car off and then turn it back on and the problem should be corrected.  I thought that was a ridiculous answer but he was right.  He said the 2005 model has this as an ongoing issue.

I had this exact car and I had all the same problems your talking about, The pump although I can't tell you for sure is on the left side of the engine as your looking at it. If it is whining it is because it is low on fluid, also when topping it off fill it to the full mark while it is running. If it is foamy turn the steering wheel all the way left and all the right a few time to help get rid of the air. You may have to let it sit a while to let the bubble escape, check and do this again, it could be a bad pump also. The overheating problem I had with mine was a bad temp sensor for the computer. It has two temp guages and the computer uses on to activate the fan as needed. I also had another problem with mine, on the front of the intake is a small plastic elbow for a heater hose and this goes bad. Had to replace mine. Wasn't hard, and the part was cheap. Hope this helps you!

SOURCE: Key won't turn in 2008 Chevy Cobalt. Tried moving

now what it sounds like is the key has a sensor built in it the keys cost around 60.00$ but this is most likely what is wrong. the sensor is a security feature with the car if the light glows while trying to turn the car then this your problem :)

2005 cobalt stalling out

If the power steering is tight and does not loosen up,i would say the power steering pump is locked up.With the engine not running ,remove the drive belt from the engine.Try and turn the power steering pulley with your hand.It should be easy to turn, turn it 4 or 5 times all the way around. If you can not move the pulley,or it stops,or gets tight turning it all the way around, then it is a bad power steering pump. This is something you will want a mechanic to do.If I can help, let me know.

YOU HAVE AN ELECTRIC POWER STEERING SYSTEM. YOUR POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE IS THE MOST LIKELY CAUSE. SCAN THE SYSTEM FOR CODES AND GO FROM THERE.

STEERING FLUID

the 2005 chevy cobalt uses electronic power steering therefore does not require any fluids unless you want to add some lubrication to the steering column at rub points if you have any.
