The car makes a loud humming sound from the rear. It seems loud at all speeds but even louder at around 45. But it's actually loud all the time. Had rear bearings replaced 30K ago and tires are relatively new. At driving speed if I take it out of gear the noise is still there, it doesn't change.
It's the wheel bearing. Guaranteed. Just replaced mine. Go to Audiworld tech articles for step by step instructions on how to test the wheel bearings. They must have been put in wrong last time or they just went out again.
Sounds like a bad pinion or ring gear in the diff. just did one on my friends quattro.
The diff in back off my quattro is making noise when it heats up , its like a thump sound when i go around bend or if i put in reverse , what could this be ?
This sounds like a pinion gear bearing, was that replaced?

I have the same year and the same problem. It appears to be the bearing in the rear differential.
And the winner is.... wheel bearing! I have the rear fold down seats, so I had someone drive while I laid in the back to determine which side of the car the noise was coming from. The noise was definitely coming from the drives side rear wheel. So, once I replaced that bearing the noise was gone and all was right with the world. At least my little part of it. Thanks for the input.
