1996 Audi A4 Quattro has a noisy rear differential

The car makes a loud humming sound from the rear. It seems loud at all speeds but even louder at around 45. But it's actually loud all the time. Had rear bearings replaced 30K ago and tires are relatively new. At driving speed if I take it out of gear the noise is still there, it doesn't change.

I have the same year and the same problem. It appears to be the bearing in the rear differential.

  • artb1 Jan 28, 2009

And the winner is.... wheel bearing! I have the rear fold down seats, so I had someone drive while I laid in the back to determine which side of the car the noise was coming from. The noise was definitely coming from the drives side rear wheel. So, once I replaced that bearing the noise was gone and all was right with the world. At least my little part of it. Thanks for the input.

It's the wheel bearing. Guaranteed. Just replaced mine. Go to Audiworld tech articles for step by step instructions on how to test the wheel bearings. They must have been put in wrong last time or they just went out again.

2001 Audi A4 Quattro 1.8. Guys, I have looked for this question even here and I can not get a clear and transparent answer.

You make it sound like it's our fault you can't find it :>D

The start of production of the Audi A4 B5 is 1994. With minor changes, it was produced until 2001. At first, only the sedan version was available, the station wagon (Avant) appeared a year later. This material provides information on relay circuits and fuses Audi A4 b5 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, with an assignment of their elements and locations.

Can't get much clearer than this. Relay 4 is one plus 'Additional Relays 23 and 24. Plus fuse 23 and 24.

Towed 2001 audi a4 quatro with a dolley tow truck...the car will not go when put into any gear..the car is a 5 speed

If you only put two wheels on a dolly, even in neutral, you smoked the center diff. Quattro cars must be flatbedded. Gonna have to replace the center differential.

Check your differential (rear-end) to see what the fluid level is?? If you are low on fluid then the bearing is wearing because of lack of oil. GET IT FIXED IMMEDIATELY BECAUSE YOU CAN LOSE A WHEEL IF THE BEARING GOES COMPLETELY.

1996 Audi A6 Quattro has a noisy rear differential

Can you give some more information about this? Is it only when your speed is up at highway speed levels, or do you hear it at lower speeds too? Does it ever get louder or quieter under any driving conditions or maneuvers? The reason I ask is that it could actually be a rear wheel bearing (they're known to go bad on this generation of Audis - heck, I just changed one on my A4 last week and now that it's quiet, I can hear the other rear bearing starting to go). If you can give some more info on this problem, we can try to narrow it down.
