I have a 2001 s10 pickup, 4.3 automatic. Runs good, but it won't pass the emissions testing because the computer doesn't have enough data in it. I've been to the emission station 4 times, it's been driven for a year and it still doesn't have enough data. Any idea on what could be preventing the computer from storing information? There are no codes showing up.
Go to a place like autozone or pepboy autoparts but you can get it cheaper at mintt.com
Has the battery been disconnected, or has it gone dead? Every time the battery is disconnected, all trouble codes are cleared, the check engine light is turned off, and all system monitors are reset. For the monitors to get back to a 'ready' status, the vehicle needs to go through one or more (sometimes quite a few) drive cycles.
When you go to the emission station, they check for codes, AND also check to see how many of your monitors are in a 'ready' status. (This keeps people from disconnecting the battery, and thus clearing any trouble codes, in order to pass emission tests).
If you have not disconnected your battery for a while, but the monitors are still not showing 'ready', you need to have a qualified shop check out your computer and other electronic systems.

Have your cat. converter checked out. I just had one of these for the same reason in my shop today.
SOURCE: Emission light comes on
it will not pass the test with the light on, and if u turn off the light they will know when they test it by testing/checking the system readiness function. Go to a Kragen or an Autozone they will run the test to see what trouble code has turned the light on, it is free, post the code back here. Oh have then reset the light after the test.

SOURCE: evaporative emission control system
The evap system allows for gas vapors to be recirculated through the system and burned by the engine, rather than vented into the atmosphere.
It means that the Gas cap is bad,the evap canister is clogged, you have a bad hose,or a sensor is bad.Replace the gas cap first,This is a common problem.
