My daughter has a 1998 vw passat-it will not start-it
is not the battery-all electrical is working-is there a security
sytem with that car?
The battery has juice but the engine will not turn over when i try to start the car and the batt. is ok
I've had a similar problem. Try using the fob to lock and unlock the door, and then when you unlock it, make sure the blinking light by the driver's side door goes out. It is possible to open or unlock the door but not turn off the alarm, which won't let you start it.
Hi
I had the same problem. It is the Alarmmmmm, just disconnet it and it will work. Good Luck
Stella. Bye.
Hi if the electrical side is ok leaves two options mechanical or fuel so if you can let me know what happened leading up to the car not starting i will be able to point you in the right direction it seems funny you should mention the security system [this does control the fuel pump but what makes you think this may be the problem, yates210456
hi the light you are talking about is part of the alarm system a ticking noise is usually a set of contacts opening and shuting inside a relay now normally the manafacters use a cut out on the fuel side on there alarms but earlier models may well use the cut out on the starter side in your case if the car will not turn over and there is this ticking noise i would look at the starter relay but first do a quick check turn your lights on main beam try to turn the engine over see if the lights go out if not thats fine as there would suggest there is enough life in it to do at least something with the starter if you know a little about cars i can give you some simple tests to check the starter and relay sorry for not getting back sooner but i thick there may be a time difference as i am in england
hi it is along way to walk but not to bad over the internet typical kids to busy doing other things got my own so i know what its like anyway if you think the batteries ok get a lenth of wire long enough to reach from the battery to the starter connect one end to the battery positive carefull not to let the other end touch the cars body or engine block find starter remove the small wire from its terminal and just touch the starter terminal the engine should turn over if not the starters faulty . replace the wire back on the starter remove the temperarey wire you fitted now if the starter is ok then make a note of the colour of the wire the you took off the starter and find the starter relay it proberbly be the one thats ticking under the dash once found the wires that go to this relay one should be the same colour as the one on the starter now get a cheap test light [a bulb with the bulb holder with two wires ]connect one end to the cars ground [earth or cars body] now there are normally four wires going to the relay put the other end of the test lead to the the wires of the relay one at a time [it doesn,t matter if they are still connected to the relay as long as you make a good contact to the wire ]the while holding the wire to your selected wire turn your ignition switch to the start position and see if the test bulb lights up do the same until you find one that does light the test bulb then release the ignition switch the light will go out if this happens then this means your ignition switch is now ok if there is no live then the ignition switch is faulty but presuming the switch is ok this leaves the relay so if the wires are still connected to the relay just flick your ignition to start then release just keep doing this a few times it should make a clicking noise so the next thing to do is get your test wire take the wires off the relay should be a plug so you cannot go wrong now put one end of the test wire to the wire that lit your test bulb up when you turned your ignition switch into its start position connect the other to the coloured wire that goes to the starter[remember earlier you made a note of the starters small wire colour] now try to turn the engine over by the key if it tuns over replace the relay thats it best of luck the secrect is take your time dont get overwhelmed yates210456
hi thanks for getting back i know the score as i have three of the darlings and they think you have a crystal ball or magic wand and don,t think hey there 60 miles away you need long arms instead of going to the dealers see if you can get a mobil auto electric tech out some don,t charge a call out fee and it may be alot cheaper and the bonus is they will do it there and then saves your daughter messing about that will suit here as most dealers will get an autoelectrican in to look at it so this cuts the middle guy out as they will add on what ever there rates are which are alot higher anyway best of luck hope you sort it yates210456

My daughter said the day before it would not start when she was driving it she heard
a ticking sound-she is away at college-I was there on Saturday and we tried jumping the
car-still would not start-there is a faint ticking sound when you turn the key when the light
by the door lock is on-when it goes out the faint ticking stops-thought the light by the lock
would have to do with the security system since it won't turn over at all. She does have 3/4
tank of gas in it.
i just talked to my daughter and she is at college-not here at home and she is too busy
studying to check out the lights on the car tonight. Could you go ahead and forward to
us the simple tests suggestions-assuming there is enough life to do the tests.
Wow I did not realize you were in England-thanks so much for trying to help us out.

wow now it sounds complicated-I will print this and show it to her father and see
what he thinks-since she is away at college may just have to have the dealer
deal with it-if the car was here I would try your tests but she is at school 60 miles
away. thanks for all the help you have sent our way-will let you know when we
finally get it started.
