Tip & How-To about 2004 GMC Envoy

Instrument cluster erratic warning lights, gauges stop working.

This is a common problem with an easy fix. If you are experiencing weird behavior from the instrument cluster it quite possibly is caused by corrosion on the circuit board on the back on the instrument cluster. To fix this you need to remove the instrument cluster. Refer to YouTube for this there are lots of videos shopping this, This step is much easier than it sounds, there are 4 screws and one plug. Inspect the circuit board you should see about a dozen places that have a dusty/crusty appearance (see the attached image). Clean the corrosion using isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swabs. Reinstall the cluster and your good to go.

My Scion xb 2006 instrument cluster fuel gauge, tachometer and speedometer will not come up, what could be the reason

Let's explore some possibilities:

Temperature-Related Issue:
Some Scion xB owners have reported similar issues during cold weather. When the temperature drops below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, the cluster may exhibit flashing behavior, and the fuel gauge and tachometer might stop working.

A common theory links this issue to the engine control unit (ECU) being affected by the cold. Once the car warms up, the flashing typically stops, and the gauges resume functioning.

Faulty Wiring or Connections:
Check all the wiring connections related to the instrument cluster. Ensure that there are no loose or damaged wires.
Inspect the wire harness near the battery area. Sometimes, a loose cold air intake (CIA) can rub against the wire harness, causing issues.

Verify that there are no fault codes stored in the ECU that could be affecting the cluster.

Moisture or Condensation:
Moisture inside the cluster can lead to erratic behavior. If you suspect this, consider removing the cluster and cleaning it thoroughly with an electric cleaner.

Pay attention to any signs of corrosion or water damage on the circuit board or connectors.

Faulty Cluster Unit:
If other troubleshooting steps don't yield results, it's possible that the instrument cluster itself is faulty.
Some Scion xB owners have resolved similar issues by replacing their clusters with units from a junkyard.

VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) Issues:
Plug a good scanner into the OBD II port and configure it to report the vehicle's speed as detected by the VSS.
If the scanner shows 0 MPH while driving, the VSS might be causing the speedometer to malfunction.

Remember that diagnosing and fixing electrical issues can be complex. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, consider seeking professional assistance from a qualified mechanic or an auto repair shop.

abs light stays on in dash. have been told this is a common problem with these models. where is brake control module located on 1998 plymouth grand voyager. 3.3. have been quoted $904 to fix. need quick, easy and cheaper solution.

Don't know how handy you may be but would seriously consider removing instrument cluster, and checking solder on circuit board. Just did mine, wasn't hard, maybe a couple of hours work. Nice small, pointed solder gun will be needed as well. They have had many weird problems with gauges, starting, running etc, all narrowed down to that printed circuit board, where the solder on the contact pins become corroded or cracked and cause some pretty weird stuff. At the very least, try removing dash enough to remove 4 screws holding cluster in, and pulling off connectors and putting them back on a couple of times, just in case it's just a dirty connection. If you decide you want to try it, and need more specific instructions, let me know, or even google , Dodge or Plymouth instrument cluster soldering, as there is some pictures and videos out there on the subject. Good Luck, and let me know how you make out.

All of the guages quit working but vehicle stays running. Will turn back on then quit again

It's common for the instrument cluster to go bad on the Chrysler products after a few years. The problem is the solder on the instrument panel where the wire harness connects to cracks due to time and heat causes this problem. If you can solder, this is an easy fix and save your self lots of $$$. Good luck and try giving a tap on the top of the dash board where the instrument panel is, that usually gives it a quick fix for a while.
