Tip & How-To about Ford Cars & Trucks

How to change an ignition on a ford truck

Turn the steering wheel clockwise, and you will reveal the ignition lock cylinder. If you can still insert and turn the key, then do so, and turn the lock to the ACC set. Take the small screwdriver and release the cylinder catch. You insert it into the hole and pull on the key; the lock will slide out.

how do I replace the ignition lock cylinder assembly in a Toyota T100

Instructions
  1. Removing the Cylinder
    • Lift the hood and prop it open. Disconnect both battery cables from their terminals. Wait at least three minutes for all residual electricity to discharge before you begin working near the airbag.
    • 2Locate the two airbag attaching screws, one on each side of the steering wheel. Pry off the plastic covers to reveal a Torx screw. Use a Torx screwdriver to loosen these two screws, which you can't remove completely. They will stop when fully retracted and remain attached to the steering wheel.

    • 3Lift the airbag out of the steering wheel. Disconnect the airbag wires from the harness by lifting up the plastic tabs on each side and pulling the two sections apart. Place the airbag face up in a safe location.
    • 4Unplug the horn electrical connector, which you will see once you remove the airbag.
    • 5Point the front wheels straight ahead. Remove the steering wheel retaining nut using a socket. Place a mark on the steering wheel and the steering wheel shaft so you will be able to realign them during reassembly.
    • 6Attach the steering wheel puller. There are bolt holes on each side of the steering wheel shaft. Screw the bolts on the puller into these holes and turn the puller handle clockwise to force the steering wheel off the shaft.
    • 7Remove the steering column covers by detaching the two screws on the front of the column. You will see these once you remove the steering wheel. There is one additional screw under the steering column. Pry off the ignition switch bezel. This is the plastic piece that surrounds the ignition cylinder. You should be able to pull it off using your fingers. If not, use a small flat-head screwdriver.
    • 8Unplug the connector from the ignition switch. This connector simply pulls out of the wiring harness, without any clips to remove.
    • 9Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the "ACC" position. Insert a small screwdriver into the hole located on the bottom of the ignition switch casing to depress the release button. With the button depressed, use the key to pull the cylinder out of the casing.
    Installing the Cylinder
    • 10Insert the key into the new cylinder and turn it to the "ACC" position. Insert the cylinder into the casing. When it seats, you should hear and/or feel a click. Try to pull the cylinder out. If you cannot do so, it is properly seated. Reconnect the ignition switch wire to the wiring harness. Snap the plastic ignition bezel back into place.
    • 11Replace the steering column covers and the three screws.
    • 12Place the steering wheel back over the steering wheel shaft, ensuring that the marks you made earlier are aligned.Turn the handle of the steering wheel puller counterclockwise until the steering wheel is fully seated. Detach the puller. Replace the steering wheel retaining nut.
    • 13Connect the horn wires.
    • 14Connect the airbag wires to the wiring harness and place the airbag into the steering wheel. Tighten the Torx screws on each side of the steering wheel and replace their covers.
    • 15Reconnect the battery cables.

Fig. Lock cylinder drill point.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the steering wheel, then remove the steering column covers.
  3. Remove the turn signal and wiper switches.
  4. Disconnect the ignition switch wiring.
  5. On some models, the hole in the lock body for removing the ignition lock cylinder was not drilled by Volkswagen. To make the hole, use the following measurements in conjunction with the illustrations. Drill the hole where "a" and "b" intersect on the lock body. The hole should be drilled 0.19 inch (3mm) deep
  6. Remove the lock cylinder by pushing a small drill bit or piece of wire into the hole and pulling the cylinder out. It might be easier to insert the ignition key, turn it to the right a little and pull on it.

To install:
  1. Insert the lock cylinder into the housing with the key in the cylinder.
  2. While gently turning the key side-to-side, press the cylinder in to the stop. It should click into place.
  3. Temporarily fit the steering wheel onto the splines, then make sure the column locks and unlocks smoothly.
  4. Install the switches, column covers, wiring and the steering wheel.
  5. Connect the battery cable.

1995-99 Cabrio, 1993-99 Golf and Jetta
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Center the steering wheel.
  3. Remove the air bag.
  4. Remove the steering column switches.
  5. If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, detach the shift lock cable from the lock cylinder housing.
  6. Remove the adapter sleeve from the steering column.
  7. Remove the spring and horn contact ring from the steering column assembly.
  8. Detach the sheer bolt.
  9. Insert the ignition key and unlock the cylinder, then detach the wiring connectors.
  10. Once all wiring has been detached, slide the housing off the steering column.
  11. Mark and drill the lock cylinder as shown and described in the above procedure.
  12. Compress the stop spring and pull the lock cylinder out of the steering column housing.
  13. Put the new lock cylinder into the steering lock housing.
  14. Insert the key into the lock cylinder.
  15. While you gently turn the key, insert the lock cylinder fully into the housing.
  16. The rest of the installation procedure is the reverse of removal.

NOTE Always use a new shear pin when installing the lock cylinder.

Ignition Switch replace

It is something you can do yourself (for alot less money)
I am assuming you are removing just the Lock Cylinder and not the entire Ignition switch?
For JUST the Lock Cylinder:
1. Disconnect the negative side of the battery.
2. Remove the lower steering column cover under the steering column. It has three (3) screws.
3. Insert the Key and turn to the RUN position.
4. Using a small screw driver - depress the Lock Retaining Tab. It is located right of center on the column in the area of the Key insertion area.
5. Remove the Lock Cylinder.
To Install:
1. Insert the Lock Cylinder in the "Lock" Position.
2. While pushing in - insert the Key and turn it clockwise to the Run Position.
Let me know if this helped. If it is the entire Ignition Switch, let me know with an email to this post. I will send the additional infomation (for free).
